Common Merganser doing some advanced yoga 🪶
A large duck with a long bill (a Common Merganser) stands on a rock. It is mid-contortion, and its head is upside-down and tucked against its side.
Love the intent look on this Red-shouldered Hawk. It’s like me looking at a buffet table. 🪶
A large hawk with a brown head, dark mottled wings, and a rusty barred chest sitting on a branch
That is exactly what's happening. Sigh.
Ha, fine work! And I have one! When I took this (this week) I was excited—it’s not one but TWO young female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. And look you can see them! Another small miracle of bird migration. But yeah I guess it’s not gonna make any calendars. 🪶

Warbler photography is hard and also sometimes very funny.

Anyone else have something for #PhotoFailFriday?#IThinkThisBirdMightBeInWitnessProtection #LeafHappens #WorstBirdPic #birds 🌿
A yellow, dark gray and white bird stands on a thin branch with almost all of its upper body hidden by a perfectly placed leaf. It looks intentional to avoid photography.
That lil Tree Swallow went on to win six NBA championships…

A wooden nest box in a field of yellow goldenrod flowers. The box has the number 23 on it. Trees and blue sky in the background.
I thought the highlight of this vid would be the amazing iridescence on the young Wood Duck, but then a special guest came into frame (Pied-billed Grebe!). I’ve had some big misses lately, but, this morning, birding was (yet again) the best thing ever. 🪶
Honestly the original is probably a better/worst pic. #worstbirdpic
A small bird with a yellow throat (a Yellow-throated Warbler) is seen between a small gap in green leaves. No one would ever take this photo on purpose.
Fall birding is tough, but we managed to find a few warblers hopping around the trees this morning, including a stunning Yellow-throated Warbler. This was my best pic. Nailed it. #worstbirdpic 🪶

No! I don't think so. But I also don't closely inspect roadkill. I'm soft like that.
Not only did I not see any, I've NEVER seen one IRL.
Not entirely sure they're real.
And yes there were donuts! On day 1 we stopped at a Parlor Doughnuts in Altoona. (They have like 50 locations now but still make a pretty great product.) But the real treat of the week was some local cheese from Clover Creek Cheese Cellar (using the honor-system fridge at the farm).
Three elaborate donuts on a plate Four wedges of shrink-wrapped cheese A large white barn with a small porch on the first floor A refrigerator with cheese, milk, and eggs
The second best bird sighting of the Pennsylvania trip was these Common Mergansers hanging out in the Juniata River. Not sure if they're females or young ones, but what a sight. 🪶
A shallow river winds through a hilly landscape. Trees line the river and rocks line the shore. Three large ducks sit on rocks in a river. The Common Mergansers have long bills, rusty-colored heads, and gray backs. About 20 large ducks swim in a river or stand on rocks along the shore.

The fancy sparrows are stopping by on their big trek south, and this morning these two showed up.
White-crowned sparrows can winter in the southern U.S. down into Central America. These two decided the creek was for bathing and drinking!
Adult in the creek and juvenile on the rock!

An adult and juvenile White-crowned sparrow by a rocky creek. The adult, with its black and white stripy head, is in the dark water and the juvenile with its brown cap is on the orange rock.
Awesome shot, Jim! I like how you sprayed the boardwalk with water first to get that reflection. Pro move! (Just a reminder: Haas Bakery in Oregon, OH, is solid. Great cake donuts when they have them.)
Noted! I'll put it on the list for next time. Someday I'm gonna go over for a hawk watch!
Spent last week living in the past in the Allegheny Mountains (hills?) of central Pennsylvania. (Stayed in a 200+ y.o. house!) Didn’t see too many birds, but the highlight was hearing a Screech Owl in the distance at dusk—something I’ve never heard before, tho they’re apparently famous for it. 🪶
Oh yeah, shorebirds too, deffo
