Today is Indian Republic Day. Although independence from colonial Britain was finally achieved in August 1947, the Constitution establishing the Republic only came into effect on 26 January 1950. On 30 January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi had been assassinated by Nathuram Vinayak Godse who had opposed his efforts to foster harmony between Hindus and Muslims, blaming him for compromising Hindu interests during the partition of India and Pakistan. The Indian national flag which today commemorates the adoption of the Constitution and the formation of the Republic is a horizontal tricolour of saffron, white and green (with a 24-spoke navy blue dharma chakra in the centre.) Saffron symbolises courage, white represents peace and truth, and green signifies fertility, growth and auspiciousness. Green, saffron and white pipes are used to house electrical cables and protect them from physical damage, moisture and environmental factors. The green and saffron ones are PVC corrugated flexible pipes designed for flexibility and ease of installation in tight spaces, whilst the stronger white rigid PVC conduit pipe offers high fire resistance.
