So grim
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

Anyone familiar with the political culture of the Trumpian GOP will not be surprised by this reporting on today's Young Republicans, but all decent human beings will be appalled by it.
POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

Something I keep seeing come up in places like the US and UK is how different orgs are responsible for propping up people like Trump or Farage. While that’s true I don’t think that’s the root of the problem. Take Trump getting elected to a second term. People chose to vote for him knowing who he is.

Breaking: Trump has officially lost the Nobel Peace Prize.

Instead, the Nobel committee is awarding the leader of the opposition in Venezuela for supporting “democracy over dictatorship.”

This is not a critique on the poster or anyone else. Just my own observation (Tressie may have said this already too). The whole point was a TV spectacle to show themselves being “alpha males”. These types of men love to exercise control and make people sit and listen to them literally held captive.

I think about this. It is foolish to think the only way R’s/conservatives/Trump supporters could win is because their opponents failed. 70+ mil Americans chose Trump over Clinton and Harris. People voted for this. Talk about Biden & Harris all you want but people chose Trump over Harris.
First, the claim that Democrats got crushed in 2024 is not accurate; it was, in fact, a fairly close election historically. Second, it ignores the global anti-incumbency direction of all elections that year. Third, it attributes undo agency to one side—“How did we let these people back into power?”

He has been explicit all along. Trump has never been coy. He might double speak or completely change what he says from moment to moment, but he’s said what he’s meant most of the time. It just sounds so wild that it can often get disregarded as absolute nonsense. That’s how he got elected. Twice.
“I think we're going to test ABC out on this. Let's see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative.”

I don’t think he’s ever been quite this explicit about his extortion.

“Debate Me” culture is not organic, endemic, or apolitical. This mode of high jacking discourse is and has been central to a 30-year conservative training program that has produced untold numbers of people to do this for every reason but “civil discourse”
It's wild to me how ostensibly smart people cannot/could not/will not see what is so obvious.

@mmasnick.bsky.social nails it. And my hunch is we'd be a better society if the Very Serious People with the Very Serious Ideas opened their fucking eyes.

The @nytimes.com has rarely felt as hopelessly out of its depth as in the past two days or so. There is still much I admire, many journalists I respect and trust, but on the Charlie Kirk assassination it simply hasn’t been very informative - not to mention some atrocious opinion “journalism”.
September 13, 2025 at 9:35 AM
I do appreciate his measured and well thought out response, but it is so frustrating to see responses like this when you look back at his YouTube history and don't see anything related to the Hortman's assassination. This isn't a competition, but it sure as hell isn't balanced either.
The murder of Charlie Kirk is part of a disturbing rise in political violence that threatens to hollow out our public life.

A free society relies on the premise that people can speak out without fear or humiliation.

No more political violence.
