Here’s the first edition of a weekly podcast episode of This is Vancouver that me and @cbcstephenquinn.bsky.social are planning to do in the lead up to next year’s local elections.

On today’s 30 minute episode — Ken Sim’s housing loss, budget news, and Richmond’s election begins.

Hope you enjoy!
What went wrong with Ken Sim’s big housing idea? | This is Vancouver | CBC Podcasts | CBC Listen
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim’s plan to create a new housing corporation was blocked at City Hall — even though his ABC team had more votes. Municipal Affairs Reporter Justin McElroy breaks down what happen...

“It seems at a time when we're talking about an austerity budget and significant cuts across the organization, this was potentially an opportunity to generate revenue,” said Fry.
“Staff inside the city's sustainability department — who spoke to BIV on condition their identities remain anonymous for fear of reprisals — said the removal of the fee recommendation effectively guts the plan’s regulatory teeth while undermining incentive for businesses to adhere to it.”

im going crazy watching the tactics that have decimated long-standing, institutional knowledge and talent in games be applied to the fucKING CITY THAT PEOPLE LIVE IN

not a for-profit corporation!! this is a fucking city dude!! these are THE jobs that need to exist!!
This sure looks like a way of pushing staff to quit

Remember, the city is also quietly offering "voluntary separation packages" with unspecified incentives as the mayor demands 0% property tax increase

More great work by my friend @isabellazavarise.bsky.social

Large turnout today in support of traffic calming on 16th. People shouldn't fear for their safety in their own neighbourhood. Now it's time for the city to act.

Thank you @lucymaloney.bsky.social and @seanorr.bsky.social for attending and speaking in support.

Add this to the list of "things a prosecutor really doesn't want to hear the judge say on their big day"
Judge: “The troubling thing about this prosecution is that everyone knew what was happening… It seems like these two [gestures to defendants Nyx and Kalicum] are being hung out to dry. As soon as politicians started complaining, all of a sudden VPD—which before was fine—suddenly is not fine.”

Why are police brotherhoods and certain activists demanding police body cams - for radically different reasons? This article looks at how body cam companies, police groups, and pro-police politicians have spread the lie that the technology reduces police violence.
okay then
The final guest to arrive at Trump's peace summit is Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Oh wait no, it's actually... FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

This video is a chilling reminder of what one aspect of street-violence looks like, particularly with a deadly weapon.

People and public spaces must be protected from this kind of deliberate lethal entitlement from drivers that have a disregard for pedestrian well-being and human life. #visionzero
Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

The closest Canada will come to mainstream coverage of a Canadian politician targeting a Canadian journalist with an international mob making rape and death treats. #cdnmedia #cdnpoli
“We’ve crossed a dangerous line when it comes to threats against journalists for doing their jobs. It shouldn’t take an immense amount of bravery to state well-grounded views, and journalists should not have to fear for their lives after speaking up.”

After the murder of Charlie Kirk, conservatives piled on Rachel Gilmore for expressing a well-founded fear. Then came violent threats.

the website that lists Rachel first as someone allegedly celebrating Kirk's murder screenshots a tweet where she explicitly condemns violence & says she hopes he survives. for that she's receiving death & rape threats

Mayors don’t need extra support. Look at the budget in your average city. Look at the percentage that goes to cops already. Look at the fucking crime stats. Look at the cities that have done particularly well with their stats- it’s never about more police.
THREAD. I don't know what there is left to say about the New York Times and Democrats, but documenting their support for authoritarianism still feels important. If there's any chance to walk back from the fascist cliff, we must see why things like today's article are so dangerous.

There are so many awful things happening in the world right now and so many of us feel powerless to change anything.

But community care is a skill we can all learn. We CAN show up for each other when we see our fellow neighbours being targeted.

Let me teach you how!

Not providing the names of murder victims is now par for the course in B.C.
It's awful that this doesn't get more media coverage, that so little is being done to get justice for these indigenous women and their loved ones. Thanks @hollyguise.bsky.social for posting this article.

baffled at how often I get in an evo on a hot summer day, turn on the car, and the air flow's set to zero by whoever used it previously. not just no AC, no air flow.

are they impervious to a hot car or am I missing a key courtesy of the shared vehicle social contract

Their campaign against the bike lane — which they said would adversely affect their business — could now very well destroy their business, their reputation and their political connections.
