Bike mechanics are vital to the shift to greener transportation, but they typically do work that’s precarious, low-pay and not backed up by formal training.

Mechanics want that to change, but they’ve got a bureaucratic hurdle in the way: a dedicated NOC code.

my latest for @pressprogress.ca ⬇️
Bike mechanics want the government to recognize the job as a distinct profession and skilled trade.

Right now, they're officially grouped with workers who repair accordions, jukeboxes and the safety valves on pipelines.

My friend @harshawalia.bsky.social was arrested and charged, and another protester was brutalized today in Vancouver at a protest targeting Apple for profiting from death and exploitation in its supply chain. The protesters also called out Apple's support of Friends of the IDF.

Been covering DULF's constitutional challenge for @thetyee.ca this week. Crown prosecutors have tried to poke lots of small holes in what founders Eris Nyx and Jeremy Kalicum were doing. Nyx and Kalicum have largely defended themselves saying they were doing the best they knew how at the time.

Might be thinking about this more than usual because of a project that will probably be announced next year, but I am ALSO thinking about the rapid invisibilization of survivors of both these things, and the fact that history has largely forgotten about encephalitis lethargica.
Been thinking a lot about how the pandemic fundamentally broke our brains and our collective response; in a way it reminds me of the frenzied excess of the 1920s as people reeled from WWI and the influenza pandemic, and the hard fall we took at the end of that decade is coming for us this time too.

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

This makes us a qualified donee in tax parlance, and means all donations are fully tax deductible — just like donations to charities.
