Three reasons to avoid cutting back dead stems and seed heads this winter:
🐞 Hollow stems provide homes for hibernating insects, such as lacewings and ladybirds
🌻 Birds feed on seed heads like teasels, sunflowers and thistles
❄️ They look good when dusted with frost or snow!

In the winter, wild brown trout spawn in rivers across the country. The nests (or "redds") can sometimes be seen from the riverbank, but a great way to spot them is from above. In this video, we take a drone tour of an upper River Aire tributary - how many redds can you see? youtu.be/gyCl60tIVfY

We didn't know this...
Did you know that squirrels don’t hibernate? Despite this common misconception, both red and grey squirrels are active all year round.

🌊 Last week at Hartlepool’s Wintertide Festival we shared our love of marine life!
✨ With Blair from Stronger Shores, people tried making seaweed plastic, while kids-at-heart crafted collages of the sea.
💙 The creativity was inspiring and the final artworks will make you smile!

Plastic litter and microplastics are concentrated in coastal zones and may well rapidly accumulate in restored saltmarshes.

See a great new #PhD opportunity to study how restored saltmarshes provide benefits and cope with potential risks of pollution, pathogens and AMR.

The perks of mussel surveying is admiring the wildlife of the Tees.....
At some point it was like a seal highway with them constantly coming down the estuary, bobbing up to get a catch a glance at us but quickly returning to the safety of the water.

Great advice from @lgspace.bsky.social
Please don't cut back shrubs and hedgerows until wildlife has taken all the autumn berries! Hawthorn, for example, is a fantastic source of food for birds - including blackbirds, thrushes and (if the weather gets very cold) waxwings.

As part of our Living Leven project we've been installing planted coir rolls along Holme Beck in Great Broughton to protect and enhance the local environment.
Coir rolls are natural, biodegradable barriers which help stabilise banks & improve water quality by filtering sediment and pollutants.
