Yes! When I went through this with dreamspinner they fought really hard to both not pay us and also string us along enough that we would not sue. I firmly believe they were embezzling the money and probably still are from authors who don't know better. We should have sued.

Personally, I am curious to see where the heck all the money went. I do hope the authors sue and ignore the protestations that there is nothing left in the till to sue over. First, I suspect there actually is. Second, the discovery process will reveal receipts. That money went somewhere.

Time to clarify something. When authors say “Unbound haven’t paid me” that makes it sound like Unbound had some money, which they used to buy authors’ writing.

Unbound had no money. The authors did: we had raised that money. They were holding it in trust.

Unbound stole our money.

Golly, it sure seems like the predatory publishers and distribution platforms are well served by authors yelling at each other about decisions made to survive under current conditions, instead of turning their collective ire on the greedy exploiters.
