That was an awesome development for her! In story and apparently also in hats!

There's no doubting where the Crawley girls get their hat skills from! The Countess of Grantham may act like a confused kidnap victim stuck in the role of country manor lady... but look at that hat expertise! I bet she could balance a billiard table on her head.

Lady Edith is often described (mostly by her FAMILY) as if she's dowdy but from season 2 onwards she has had marvellous outfits -- and her hats only get better and better! Tell me I don't need to rewatch all six seasons to figure out where this one is from.

Lady Sybil Crawley is one of the all time great hat-wearers. This one with a sort of felted embroidery situation is one of my favourites. I want to steal it and pin it to a wall.

Hunting is terrible but Edwardian ladies in top hats are spectacular.

The new Downton Movie offered a whole lot of cozy goodness, but particular a splendid array of new hats! Of all the costume dramas, Downton has always delivered good hat.

This is wild to me.

... and our subscriber essay in September 2024 was by @tansyrr.bsky.social : how #Pratchett deconstructed fantasy heroes right from the start (and with a massive focus on Cohen, the barbarian of my heart...).

You can read it still be subscribing, for AUD 30/year! www.speculativeinsight.com
Purple background, white text, which says I could argue that the most subversive factor of most of Pratchett's leading male fantasy heroes is that they are decent human beings. In fact, let's take a moment to do that. "Deconstructing the Fantasy Hero since 1983" -- Tansy Rayner Roberts

hahaha oh yes. I get personally offended by how quickly other people's children age when I'm not around them, while also being amused when people are shocked at my children doing the same.

So it's all SECRET REVEAL and OMG NO ONE KNEW and CONCEALED MARRIAGE instead of 'hey we assumed no one cared about these actors any more so we left them alone for a bit and it turns out they keep living their lives even when we're not staring directly at them ARE THEY MAGIC?'

I think my favourite thing about the Downton Abbey movie coverage so far is all the media flipping out because they forgot to obsessively invade the privacy of the cast for the last several years and now they have several marriages, pregnancies and babies to catch up on.

Not saying I don't love the show, but I feel like viewers who found it via the fluffy, low-stakes films are in for a bit of a shock about the brutal terrain on the roads to all those happy endings.

Even the usual British definition of 'cozy' storytelling (much grimmer than in other parts of the world) doesn't usually lean quite so much into medical body horror, familial betrayals and romantic pairs enduring years of torment before they can finally be together (and/or die young).
tansyrr.bsky.social
It is so bizarre to me to see how much 'cozy' is being used in the promo tour for Downton Abbey Happy Ever After - all 3 movies certainly ARE cozy because basically epilogues but the original series was pure agony!angst!melodrama punctuated by witty remarks, frocks and tea.

We've been publishing some cool extras every now and then, like this listicle from @tansyrr.bsky.social about Discworld dads... you can see them at all www.speculativeinsight.com/extras.

You'll also find a brilliant time travel (ish) short story, and Celia Lake and Freya Marske in conversation.
