14 October 1943 | At 15.30 prisoners of the German extermination center at #Sobibor began a revolt. Most of the SS guards were killed. Around 300 prisoners managed to escape, some 50 of them survived the war.

#OTD in 1943 several hundred inmates fought against the superior strength and weapons of Nazi SS and Ukrainian guards. Fifty of those men and women survived and their reports provide some insight into the cultural activities that took place in Sobibór.

Alexander Zemlinsky (born #OTD in 1871) was an Austrian composer, conductor and teacher. His pupils included Korngold, Krása, Berg, Webern and Weigl. He fled Germany in 1933 reaching the USA in 1938, but he did not flourish and he was almost forgotten.

13 October 1942 | A French Jewish boy, Jean Stolowicz, was born in Paris.

He arrived at #Auschwitz on 10 October 1943 in a transport of 1,000 Jews deported from #Drancy. He was among 491 of them murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

13 October 1904 | A Jewish woman, Ajdla Jabłonkiewicz, was born in Sulejów. In 1925 she emigrated to Belgium.

Deported to #Auschwitz from Mechelen with her daughter Sarah on 8 September 1942. They were probably murdered in a gas chamber on 10 September 1942 after selection.
