It's frustrating, certainly. It's hard to know if this was a deliberate choice or if they bungled their vetting. The latter seems unlikely, but there is no transparency in the selection process.

I really value your insight. Of course, those who support Maduro promote all sorts of conspiracy theories about her. Clearly she is the victim of violent persecution by Maduro and his supporters. But that does not automatically mean her ideology is good.

In no way do I defend the authoritarianism and brutality of the Maduro regime, nor diminish her pro-democracy work against the seizure of power by Maduro in 2024. But her participation at this event and the contents of her speech are troubling. I don't know how the Nobel prize committee missed it.

In her speech she said that Venezuela and Latin America "are an essential part of the West" because they are "direct heirs to Greek philosophy, Roman law, and the Judeo-Christian religion." She is appealing to the nationalist, right-wing populist parties in the Patriots for Europe group.
