Hi all! A quick intro to say hello here: I am a sociologist of gender, sexuality, law, crime, and knowledge. Currently studying LGBTQ people's experiences with police. Check out www.policingtherainbow.com. Also the author of Sorting Sexualities: Expertise and the Politics of Legal Classification.
Sorting Sexualities
In Sorting Sexualities, Stefan Vogler deftly unpacks the politics of the techno-legal classification of sexuality in the United States. His study focuses specifically on state classification practices...

Guess the UC doesn't care about the promises it made to current and former fellows that we would be able to use this incentive throughout our entire careers. Very disappointing.

UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

By all means, let's have a cishet, white, conservative man tell us about how women ruined the workplace. How novel. The @nytimes.com is such trash.
I'm too tired for this sh*t.

How about we make police carry liability insurance so the city doesn't have to cover the millions a year ($100 million in 2024, I believe) in lawsuits against the CPD? Nah, let's just raise property taxes again.

Really, @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social? The guy who said gays should be stoned to death and Black women don't have the brain power of white men was practicing politics the right way? You're trash, Ezra. Be quiet. We don't have to respect a guy's bigotry just because he's dead.

So tired of being told that sexualities work is “better suited” for speciality journals. Do better, editors.

The existence of billionaires is a policy failure.
No, it's a simple recognition that massive wealth in the hands of individuals is often used to constrain the freedom of others, and a functioning society should have checks against unconstrained power. Like taxing billionaires out of existence.
Saying that billionaires shouldn’t “exist” is to say you don’t believe in freedom. In a free society, people should be free to try to be as successful & wealthy as they can. We can debate how much billionaires should be taxed, that’s fine, but to say they shouldn’t “exist” is anathema to freedom.

Toward a Queer Pathways Framework: Understanding the Disproportionate Incarceration of LGBTQ People - Critical Criminology

One of my students just wrote me the best note a teacher can get, and I'm bawling. Amidst all the ChatGPT generated papers, sometimes students remind you exactly why you love teaching, so I couldn't resist sharing a little piece of what they wrote ❤️

While I don't disagree, I also have a new paper coming out soon that shows that when you tell people what "defund the police" actually means (i.e., move money from police to social services), there is much higher support for it.
"Abolish ICE" and "defund the police" are both reasonable and correct on the merits but were absolutely neutered by centrists smearing them as radical activist overreach.
"ICE is a rogue federal agency operating with impunity-destabilizing families, terrorizing neighborhoods, and eroding the very principles of justice it claims to defend. What happened yesterday ... is not an accident-it is the deliberate outcome of a system sliding deeper into authoritarianism."

The thing is, the reason we don't trust conservatives in sociology is because the empirical evidence rarely supports conservative viewpoints. The reason many sociologists are "liberal" is not because we are ideologues; it is because we follow the evidence.
Disciplines with the largest trust gap between conservatives and liberals in the US: Climate, Environment, Virology, Ecology, Sociology. Even the lowest gap disciplines (e.g., Math) show a trust gap. www.nature.com/articles/s41... (paywalled) ht @petersuber.bsky.social

What could have been the story of Trump if the US were sane.
Marine Le Pen, the French far-right leader and front-runner in the 2027 presidential election, was found guilty of embezzlement by a criminal court and immediately barred from running for public office for five years. nyti.ms/4448XzW

Thankful to have this guy as my governor right now and to see at least one Dem not seeking to appease Trump or find "common ground" with a fascist.
