Do you remember kicking Chad in elementary?

He kept kicking my shins under the cafeteria table, every lunch. I’d go back to class with dirt and scrapes. I never kicked back. Chad was so small back then. Honestly just a fly to a kid my size. But you were tiny too and full of fury at the injustice of it. Maybe as angry as when you argued with Mrs. Thompson. Just madder than a hornet. You’d try to brush off the dirt and end up smacking my scrapes as you ranted, like there was so much feeling in you it would burst out. And you’ve always been convinced you’re right. About everything. So when I wouldn’t kick back, you kicked him for me.

That was when Chad started picking on you instead. And then he got his growth spurt.
