A large, negative-polarity coronal hole is rotating away from directly facing Earth. In this image, you can see the dark area as the coronal hole. These areas on the Sun are where magnetic field lines are in an open configuration and solar wind can flow freely outwards.

The estimated planetary K index has now reached Kp=5 or G1 minor geomagnetic storm levels due to CME effects. We may see G2 conditions later if the Bz can remain pointing southward. A nice display is ongoing at mid-latitudes over the European sector.

Solar wind conditions are still favorable for mid-latitude aurora. Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania may get a show tonight. Check webcams for live views and monitor apps like Norlys and Glendale for substorm activity.

Woah! Suddenly the Bz situation looks very good and mid-latitude aurora may be possible. GOES magnetometers are very charged, and a substorm could be coming soon.

Sorry for the late notice about this, I was at the STEVE workshop banquet.

Another substorm is brewing! Check how low the GOES Mag values have become tonight. Keep an eye on these plots over the next 30 minutes for a potential substorm to occur... it is almost bound to happen with this much instability.

From NOAA SWPC this morning:

"The anticipated CMEs finally arrived overnight of, but appear to be indicative of very weak nearby passage influences. While the G1 Watch remains in effect for the remainder of Friday, conditions are not favorable at this time."

We can see in the ELEVO-HI model all the CMEs that have been identified and where they are heading. You can see starting around October 12 all the CMEs heading towards Earth. Impacts may start around midday October 16 UT. Maybe we will see G1-G2 conditions.
