They misuse the word "hallucinate". Only minds can hallucinate.

What they really mean is that their extremely complex and sophisticated passive pattern matching software frequently generates rubbish because it has little or no training in vast areas of human experience.

Reason No. 324 why no-one should think that "AI" (artificial but certainly not intelligent) is an unmitigated Good Thing: it's mathematically inevitable that AI will hallucinate.

We need far more discussion of the risks of all this and less frantic hype. I mean, really, what's the hurry?

There's a case to be made, supported by the content of the linked article, that it would be useful to stop calling this LLM phenomenon "hallucination" and to start calling it "bullshit"---that is, the generation of plausible sounding garbage in order to meet expectations.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Hey.

Wanna see what it looks like to fly past your home planet?

THEN LOOK AT THIS

This is the OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft's view as it swung by Earth on Tuesday, 23 September 2025 from an altitude of 3,500 km.

Look how beautiful that big blue marble is ❤️

🚨 Surprise! Not AR4294–4296, but AR4299 erupted on Dec. 6 with an almost X-class M8 flare and a CME aimed at Earth. NASA forecasts a Dec. 9th arrival with possible G2–G3 storms—auroras possible!

Comet ATLAS (C/2025 K1) is literally cracking up near the North Star — four fragments and counting. It’s even glowing gold, thanks to its bizarre carbon-poor chemistry. Around 10th magnitude and visible pre-dawn between the Big Dipper and Polaris. Wild sky show tonight. 🌟 spaceweather.com/

Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS just delivered its best color image yet—blue CO+ tail, green C₂ head, all classic comet stuff. The twist? A jet is blasting toward the Sun while the tail streams away. Interstellar visitors love drama. More at spaceweather.com.

Mercury’s sporting a 24M-km sodium tail — basically a comet in disguise. Sunlight blasts sodium off its thin atmosphere, creating that yellow glow. Around Dec. 9 it could shine up to 10× brighter. Sky watchers, grab those filters! Full story: spaceweather.com #Mercury #Astronomy #SpaceWeather

Tomorrow, we may see a strong, G3 geomagnetic storm and auroras occuring further equatorward than usual. This is in response to a coronal mass ejection (CME) heading towards Earth. Impact may occur sometime Monday night into Tuesday. Here's what's happening and what to expect 🧵

Large flares and CMEs are perfectly common and normal around solar maximum as are strong geomagnetic storms. It may "feel" like we are seeing more activity than usual, but this is what an average cycle produces. Solar cycle 24 was anemic in comparison to cycle 25 (current).

We are in the declining phase of cycle 25. It is expected to see a decrease in overall flare and CME activity but slight uptick in extreme events. Surges of activity are also to be expected. See: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Direct hit! Here is a preliminary WSA ENLIL+Cone model of the M8.1 CME from NASA M2M. Earth shock arrival time is calculated to be Dec 9, 4 UT +/- 7 hr (Monday night).

G2-G3 conditions may be possible, but we'll see what the official forecast from NOAA SWPC is. Stay tuned...

The M8.1 CME has emerged in SOHO LASCO C2/C3 images as an asymmetric full halo. This means it is heading at Earth.

NOAA and NASA have modeled the eruption, predicting impact sometime on Dec 9 early (NASA) or in the later half (NOAA) UT. We may see a geomagneic storm Monday night.
