If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Bare i går kveld har Trump re-truthet fire kommentarer om at han fortjener fredsprisen. Én av dem mener fredsprisen til og med bør oppkalles etter ham.

Det er bare å stålsette seg.

Also not a movie, but House of Cards. Added bonus: the actor isn't nice either.
Sen. Roger Marshall: "It seems very disingenuous for the Democrats to be blaming President Trump for these rural hospital struggles. The reason rural hospitals are struggling is because of the bad economy."

There’s an article to be written about how leading data-focused analysts (Silver, Klein, Yglesias, Leonhardt) have become vibes-focused pontificators. I expect it was undue self-confidence that led them to become the former & that overrode the data orientation for them to become the latter.
Last little whimper of the American democracy. R.I.P.
The Trump administration’s threat to deploy troops in Portland is unlawful.

Here’s a thought.

Focus on protecting the healthcare of the American people.

Speaking of things making themselves irrelevant and shrinking their audience, how are things at the Washington Post?
Flott tråd!

Disney has been the standard-bearer of American culture to the rest of the World for a century – so yes: when the standard-bearer falls, the regiment scatters

The worse feeling in the world is seeing your support disappear mid-way through your PhD journey.

Working towards the degree & being a scientist already requires mental and emotional fortitude. What is happening now is another beast, at another level.

/7 So I question the proposition that just because Charlie Kirk didn't go around killing people, but went around belittling and demeaning and dehumanizing them instead, that he's inherently admirable. Would I be a hero if I said I will debate ANYONE about whether black people are human? No.

Obviously, there's bigger news happening right now, but Senate Republicans just voted against releasing the Epstein files. Every Democrat voted to release them. Susan Collins was the deciding vote to protect Trump and others named in the files.

The AI authorship issue is real. We've caught papers that looked OK but had references to works by the *journal editors* that *do not exist*. Like, don't send us papers citing papers we know we didn't write, right?

Perhaps no politician in history has tried to dominate every day's news cycle like Trump has. He loves being on camera. I've been away from the TV a bit today. What did Trump say today? Oh, you're saying he didn't say anything? For the 6th straight day? That's odd.

On the subject of whether we are under authoritarianism, I heard Ezra Klein say something like, "authoritarianism is here, it's just unevenly distributed". That's kind of true, but misses the point that, short of very extreme totalitarian cases, this is *always* true of authoritarianism.
Well, I really hoped this piece would spark some debate, mostly because I *want* to be proven wrong! Please read the piece. My view is that Trump has made extraordinary progress on most of these items, but what constitutes an endpoint is up for debate.
I find this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece helpful in clarifying why I disagree with the "America is already in competitive authoritarianism" thesis.

Don's checklist shows things that Trump has tried to do, but he hasn't *succeeded* in most areas

Since my first stay in USA 32 years ago, I've found it hard to put a fitting name to the American conservative exceptionalism that Trump is only the culmination(?) of. There it is: it's American chauvinism! Plain and simple.
Glorification of Trump by cabinet and on public buildings, threats to Soros and Democratic politicians, new federal militia, death penalty talk, invasion of cities….

But nothing can shake the American chauvinism of the economic, media, and political elites, who continue to normalize Trump 2.0.
Nevertheless: anti-intellectualism working incredibly fast
Total, across all years (if so: huge), or for freshmen?
What's the drop in international enrollment?
