Today at #AshlawncuttingLNR we tackled the tricky overhanging Willow at the reservoir pond. It'ssurprising how much larger the pond looks now :-).
Paler green overhanging Willow that was shading out a large area of the pond The Willow from the bank as we left it on Sunday last. Willow removed without anyone getting wet. The reservoir pond is concave and concrete lined and gets deep a couple of feet out! The Willow nearly all removed. Cut carefully with rope attached,pull back to bank and repeat.

Return to the scrub by the steps up to the orchid shelf at Newbold Quarry. Scrub work starts now untilSpring to extend the areas of calcareous grassland on the spoil banks.See ALText
The steps up to the orchid shelf whene we were there 04/11 grass cutting on the "bare" bank adjacent. Started clearing small scrub with the brush cutter to allow easier acess for today. The small grassland at the top of the steps with Twayblade,Bee and Common Spotted orchid . Claring the small trees and srub will extend this area. A good start made today!! Looking Eastwards over thequarry pool A fine view that will be wider soon A panoramic shot of the grasslands on the spoil heaps' Nfacing slopes. The area we're working on now is right of centre. The more grassland the better!!

#AshlawncuttingLNR work party today focussed on the Areas either side of the former reservoir pond. Coppicing large Hazel shrubs on the South side and breaking through the scrub on the North side to access overhanging Willows and prepare to lay the scrub into a hedge
2 pale coppice stools remain in front of the big Willow on the South side of the reservoir pond at Ashlawn. A good morning's work to cut these 2 using hand tools. The cut Hazels were used to extend the dead hedge around the marsh ,on the right. Plenty of good stakes came in very handy. The big Willow is behind the 3 Birch trees. Looking South across the reservoir pond towards the coppiced Hazels . The overhqanging Willows are one of the next jobs. Cutting them out will let a lot more light onto the pond. It'll be heqavy work and a bit tricky. This is the gap we made this morning through which we'll access the overhanging Willows and get them out. If all goes well we'll lay the scrub into a hedge letting much more light onto the grasslands of the "Healthy Living Walk"
