In 1791, during the French Revolution, homosexuality was decriminalized when the anti-Sodomy laws were removed from the French Penal Code. Homosexuality was not explicitly outlawed, but was still repressed indirectly by other laws, the last of which were repealed in the 1960s. #QHM25 #HistorySky

At a local No Kings rally near Innsmouth, Massachusetts, *every* protester showed up in an inflatable frog costume.

They must be from a different supplier than the Portland frog's costume, though. Bystanders describe the costumes as more like fish-frogs, "batrachian," with an odd, loping gait.
Hans Christian Anderson, the author of stories like 'The Little Mermaid', and 'The Snow Queen', struggled with his sexuality his entire life, and based on his journal entries, he was most likely queer, possibly bisexual. #QHM25 #BookSky
The Hanky Code, invented in the mid-1800s, communicates a rainbow of sexual preferences. Color & position indicate the wearer's desires, & what role they prefer. Created by prospectors in mining camps (where there were few women), it labeled dancers as leader or follower. #QHM25 #HankyCode #KinkSky
The red necktie was a coded symbol gay men used to identify each other in the early 1900s in New York City & surrounding areas. The painting 'The Fleet's In!' by Paul Cadmus features a subject wearing a red necktie & was subject to censorship in the 30s. #QHM25 #FashionSky #QueerHistory
The term 'urning' or 'uranian' used to refer to homosexuality was coined by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs in the 1800s. He was inspired by a form of Aphrodite; Aphrodite Urania, a more celestial version of the goddess, born of Uranus & the sea without a female parent. #QHM25 #GreekSky #QueerHistory
In the 1960s the concept of 'coming out' began being politicized /utilized as an activist action in order to show society at large that queer individuals were a part of every community and were real people worthy of respect. #QHM25 #ComingOutDay
The Mattachine society was a clandestine group, founded in 1950, that was one of the early societies dedicated to the civil liberties of gay men. It was founded by Harry Hay, & was a place for isolated gay men to socialize, as well as organize protests and other activist work. #QHM #QueerHistory

After a nearly fatal illness in 1776 Jemima Wilkinson, announced that she had actually died and the genderless soul of Public Universal Friend had taken up the body under orders of God. The Friend continued to preach Quaker beliefs until at least the 1800s. #QHM25 #HistorySky #WeHaveAlwaysExisted
