I find @tomtugendhat.bsky.social's argument not just ludicrous, but dangerous. Due process is *absolutely* paramount in criminal law - not "whose side you are on".

Trump: You build what's called a reverse bathtub. And it's not that uncommon, but it is actually a reverse—you, you seal it. The problem is, nature always wins. I know a lot about reverse bathtubs. I've done it, and it's something you only do in emergency

Hang on ... you're using lots of inconsitent stuff here. What you want is the labour compensation share of GDP and it's been.....

..... flat

So pay and benefits in line broadly with GDP since Thatcher and it is all rather unexciting

This is such a good corrective by @chrisgiles.ft.com to the "working-age welfare spending is exploding/out-of-control" narrative that more & more people seem to see as an incontrovertible fact www.ft.com/content/ee67...

I can’t remember whether our right-wing media was completely detached from reality before Brexit; Gove’s anti-expert rhetoric; Johnson’s blatant lies etc etc. I fondly imagine things were never this bad…
The UK is by no means a fiscal outlier internationally.

We are ‘middle of the pack’ on the scale of the deficit, and UK government borrowing is projected to fall by more than in other large economies.
Chart shows general government fiscal balance as a percentage of GDP in the UK and comparator countries (positive values denote a budget surplus). Title states: "In terms of borrowing, the UK is ‘middle of the pack’ among advanced economies."

as an outsider looking in, isn't this in the long term totally unproductive? It won't turn any dems into reps, but surely it will turn some of the reps in these blue states to voting dem. Trump seems to think that blue / red states are binary.
Trump has declared a sort of war on half of us.
