I just checked up sales stats for the Leaf and saw something more interesting. The Leaf's sales doubled the year the Model S was introduced and tripled the year after, compared to the year before the S introduced. The Model S even legitimized the Leaf and made it a viable option.

Until Tesla came, the Leaf & maybe the Bolt were the popular option, primarily bought by environmentalists & enthusiasts. And the charging infrastructure barely existed. But it was introduction of the futuristic Model S that people got interested and the SC network that moved the needle.
