I'm highly suspicious of anyone who looks at "here is a way to care about people" as some kind of oppressive mandate. You don't have to do it if you don't want to! But railing against the suggestion like it's some kind of targeted cruelty is just giving the game away.

The idea that people who are pro-COVID precautions are invested in a single individual's choices is an egotistical interpretation of reality. We're looking at a system designed to harm people, and encouraging people to reject that system to whatever degree they feel comfortable. That's not an attack

I'm trying not to engage in mask discourse because I find it genuinely enraging but the idea that "masking helps vulnerable people" translates to "mandatory masking at all times or else you're evil" is just blatantly people trying to not feel guilty about their refusal to mask.

What happens to our reputation as a city if the governor isn't fucking up at every press conference AND we elect a mayor who isn't the worst person in the world?

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

Using the knowledge of all the things I'm not supposed to combine with my muscle relaxants as a cheat sheet for things that will help LIKE my muscle relaxants without being muscle relaxants. This is definitely what the detailed warnings were designed for.

I resent having to give Kathy Hochul credit but sometimes she deserves it.

As a person who remembers the way that Big Brother fandom was talking about HGs in real time during the post-All Stars boom, I am actually delighted that people are discussing whether current Big Brother discourse TODAY is bigoted. We've grown as a community! #bb27 #bbsky

I hate every single part leading up to this whole, but the idea that AI is decimating vital resources to steal from fan communities and sex workers so that terminally online dudebros can get halfway into a plagiarized story only to discover it's not misogynistic enough is very funny actually.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Something something the ironic existential futility of trying to get myself to watch last week's Survivor that I missed while seeing Waiting for Godot

Is there somehow not enough that AIPAC actually does that we can blame them for

It always says great things about your tenure prospects when the best way you can get news coverage is calling attention to your failures at being both a human being and a scholar

Honestly I think that more famous women at Comic Con should wear cute nerd shit. Get a tee shirt tailored! Embrace your audience!

I want to reference this essay every time a Big Brother houseguest is like "You just don't understand the CONTEXT" while ignoring that in addition to the edited shows there were also live feeds that let viewers see both their interactions with others, and others' reactions to them.

Simply incredible, in the original sense, that he didn’t understand how reality shows work

I watched this couples’ therapy; this guy sucks, now he’s mad that everyone who watched their eps also thinks he sucks and he’s trying to rewrite the narrative by accusing the show of highlighting how bad he sucks
spooloflies.bsky.social
It's normal to see people who don't understand therapy and normal to see people who don't understand reality television but you really have to clap it out for people who don't understand either one but volunteer for the combination.

If I wanted to be seen as a talented professional writer with insight to the human condition, I probably wouldn't publish an essay revealing that it never occurred to me during the season I watched that the people who were shown to be in the wrong might have had internal struggles of their own.
spooloflies.bsky.social
Not at all, but your kneejerk use of that accusation is telling.
spooloflies.bsky.social
You don't get to blame AIPAC for young Republicans being explicitly pro-Nazis. That's like the one (1) thing they're willing to criticize the right for.
spooloflies.bsky.social
Two things can be true at once:

-Netanyahu's administration is fucking evil
-Blaming every bad thing in politics on Israel and AIPAC whether it relates or not is textbook antisemitism

Not acknowledging (2) makes it harder to make the (very valid!) argument for (1).

As another Jewish woman in the industry, I can clear this up: It's due to her being an asshole.

Fox News host Emily Compagno claims that the backlash to Bari Weiss being named CBS News editor-in-chief is due to her being Jewish:

"This kind of thing would make me laugh if there was not an antisemitic thread in there."
