The winning position has always been there for Democrats on Columbus Day: rename it "Italian-American Day." Move it to a time of the year that has more significance to Italian-Americans, like with the Feast of San Gennaro in September.

The American right-wing understands that key demographic segments get pissed at the idea that Columbus Day might not be a recognized holiday, but nobody actually gives a shit about Columbus. Some people see Columbus Day as a holiday celebrating Italian-Americans, and "that's* what they fear losing.
