Honestly, once somebody hates one minority, they eventually learn to hate others. Scratch a transphobe, and you'll a find a racist or sexist or homophobe or Islamphobe. If you surround yourself with, and can only find support from those also fuelled by hatred; their targets will become your targets.
I know that it would be an easy paycheck and all, but seriously how well would an audiobook recording even pay? Even if we're working from the premise that they don't care about transpeople, surely they must understand the bad press they will get and the impact on their legacy for a piddling check.
And it's not like there haven't been examples of film critics becoming filmmakers before. Also while I have never seen any of his videos, so I cannot judge the quality of his work, youtube critics can be just as good, thoughtful, and legit as written criticism, just look at Fantano
Pulse is a great and depressingly prescient movie. I don't think any other film captures the soul crushing loneliness of the terminally online. It's probably also the zero year for the liminal horror of the likes of Skinamarink, analog horror, and the work of Jane Schoenbrun.
I dunno. I would imagine he would at least admire the craft of Promethus, even if it did kind of kill his At the Mountain of Madness dream project.

Neil Gaiman may be rightfully cancelled now, but the Hell in The Sandman is really disturbing, especially with the added element that all the souls are free to leave, bur never even realise because they believe they deserve to be there.
Man, with that photo I can imagine a lot of emo and goth girls saying "He may be a high priest of hell, but I can fix him..."

I love Scorsese on Scorsese. I miss those director on director books. There was some great ones; Lynch, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and my absolute favourite was Cronenberg on Cronenberg. It was the first proper book I read about filmmaking.
It's funny how it always those who are not in any real danger from bigots that say stuff like her. I don't think Knightly would be so cool with "opposing views" if they impinged on her rights.
It's kinda evil to not include Phantoms 😀 A film I only knew for years as a punchline " yo, Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms", but I watched it recently and it's actually pretty good. Kind of a remix of The Thing and Prince of Darkness.

I think the 93 version is great too. Meg Tilly is so scary in that film. She has a weird other worldly engery in general that doesn't always get used well, but here it's a perfect match of actor and role.

I suspect (and really, really hoping) that this is less a case of selling out and is actually somebody fundamentally misunderstanding what generative A.I. is, crossed with an ageing artist's FOMO.
