On this date 200 years ago the Erie Canal officially opened. It has been an honor to design this for the NY Canal Corp for the bicentennial. #art

JOIN ME as I lead another trip to Antarctica for Betchart Expeditions in March 2026 for the Southern Lights. By day it’s seals, penguins and icebergs as we travel below the Antarctic Circle, at night, so much more. #aurora #antarctica #astronomy

One year ago today I got to see Europa Clipper launch with my wife who is on the E-Themis instrument team.

OMG!!! I’m flying to Amsterdam on my way to Kilimanjaro and made sure to get a window seat on the north side of the plane in hopes of aurora and was blown away by the colors. I’ve never seen them so bright! Here are my crappy iPhone photos.

Bags are packed and tomorrow I fly to Kilimanjaro. I’m the astronomer on a trip for Betchart Expeditions and The Planetary Society to see a total lunar eclipse over the baobab trees of Tanzania (with the chance of a major auroral storm during my polar flight there). #childhooddream #art #astronomy

Riding a bike, kayaking, or boating on the Erie Canal is a journey thru America of yesteryear as driving Route 66. It was a huge honor to be asked to design this for their Bicentennial. They have made a pdf to download and print your own. #art edge.sitecorecloud.io/newyorkpowe2...

I’ve got a booth at the annual Ithaca NY Artist’s Market on August 8th. I’ll be selling posters and canvases for a selection of my Finger Lakes and New York designs (including the Erie Canal bicentennial this year). I’m in booth 56: Tyler Nordgren. Check it out:

Got the word, my 2023 & 2024 Solar Eclipse posters arrived at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum to be in their permanent collection. They join the 2017 posters I did. They are 75 posters in total. You can see them all here: www.tylernordgren.com/2023-2024-so... #art #astronomy

I lead astronomy trips and draw travel posters for the ones I do. In these crazy times, it brings me joy to think of distant beautiful places where awe-inspiring sights are visible overhead. Here’s one trip I just finished and one I’ll be going on this Fall. #astronomy #art

I’ve heard some astro folks say this guy could be a good pick. But this administration will have no honest members. Not a single one is qualified to run a lemonade stand much less be a public servant.
This kind of thing is so gross on so many levels
President Trump's nominee to head NASA, Jared Isaacman, really really really really really did not want to admit that Elon Musk was in his meeting with Trump, when Isaacman was offered the NASA post. This ranks up there as some of the worst testimony that I have ever seen on Capitol Hill.

One year ago all the communities I worked with got to experience totality during The Great North American Eclipse. Today these are being acquired by the Smithsonian and I still have some left on my website. www.tylernordgren.com/2023-2024-so... #art #astronomy #thegreatnorthamericaneclipse

Antarctica below 71°S and I’ve seen the aurora australis and emperor penguins, heard glaciers calving and minke whales blowing and sailed along the Wilkins Ice Shelf.

All my gear for Antarctica, Buenos Aires, and a Broadway show is packed. First leg to Antarctica complete. Drove 5 hours from home to JFK since a line of storms hit my local airport just as my first flight was to depart. Next stop Buenos Aires.

Holy shit. This is *the* gold-standard measurement of atmospheric CO2 -- the one in all the charts.
The Trump administration is planning to cancel its lease at a government laboratory in Hawaii, a site where scientists support key observations of surging greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere, according to a list obtained by Democratic members of Congress and shared with The Post.
Trump moves to close facility that helps track planet-warming pollution
The lab is connected to the Mauna Loa Observatory, where scientists gather data to produce the Keeling Curve, a chart on the daily status of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations.

Oh this is beautiful and wondrous!
A total lunar eclipse (seen from Earth) is a total solar eclipse seen from the moon.
Here is the “diamond ring” of last night’s eclipse seen by Blue Ghost on the Moon! 🧪

This! Exactly this. “Make no mistake, Musk doesn’t love Mars. He loves his giant rockets and being first.” That’s why he’s destroying NASA.
There are lots of BIG emotions during this week of the annual LPSC meeting. Some folks are there and wondering if it will be their last time. Some are not there due to government regulations. Some are not there due to the dangerous actions of the Texas government. #LPSC2025 #PlanetaryScience
Today is the first day of the annual* Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, the biggest planetary science meeting in the world.

And we're hearing that NASA's Office of Technology, Policy and Strategy and Office of the Chief Scientist have been shut down.

In 10 days I head to Argentina for a 2-week trip to Antarctica in search of the Southern Lights. It’s a cruise I helped design for Oceanwide Expeditions. As an Alaskan I am so excited to travel below the Antarctic Circle! #art oceanwide-expeditions.com/antarctica/c...

I’ve been asked to host a tv show about astronomy travel. It’s everything I’ve always dreamed of doing but seems utterly inconsequential in the current situation so I haven’t mentioned it to anyone.
This research paper that shows modern data and Henrietta Leavitt's data are in excellent agreement brings me serious joy. From glass plates in the 1900s to digital cameras in the 2000s, same results with similar noise. She was amazing and needs name dropped more often.

I wouldn’t be where or who I am today without the REU program I had in summer of 1990. That 8 week program was the critical moment of my life.
This administration is literally destroying US science.

The NSF REU program is a foundational pathway for building the next generation science workforce. I say as an REU alum.

He said we could get vaccinated if we wanted. But not if they don’t make them.
A lot of people are going to die from this
First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year.

“'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'"

Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder.

ICONIC: Yosemite National Park workers just hung an upside-down American flag—THOUSANDS of feet up on El Capitan. That’s not decoration. That’s a distress signal. They’re telling us the country is in danger. Are you paying attention?
