Artist, Astronomer, Author, International Tour Leader, Speaker and all around Astronomical Bon Vivant coined the phrase “Half the park is after dark.”
It was weird staying at an Airbnb on the canal in Palmyra NY and seeing all the literature for guests visiting “the holy sites.”

Living in the Finger Lakes region of NY there are just too many bodies of water here not to get out for a paddle while the weather lasts. It was 84° 10 days ago. #parkchat

Yes it is. Thanks! Designed it for my wife and wound up selling hundreds to the mission teams.

Kayaking. More fun than swimming and more stable than canoeing. I’ve tried to do this in every park I’ve visited (at least the ones with bodies of water). #parkchat

And head of NASA. Although most folks, including him, seem to forget that.

And thank you for a great #parkchat. I’ve been avoiding most social media since early November last year. So happy to find reasons to come back.

Two pieces of advice: 1) If it’s a boring photo by day, adding the Milky Way isn’t going to make it better at night. 2) A three-day old crescent moon is your friend. The Milky Way is still totally visible, but now you’ve got a light source for shadow and and definition to your landscape.

Great place to go. Here’s a tip: in Mallorca the eclipse happens at sunset. The instant totality ends, turn around to see the moon’s shadow lift off the Earth and up into the sky. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve been told. #parkchat

So was “Runza to Nebraska” not an option?

I think Hot Springs got almost 4 minutes of totality. I’d have to check. If I recall they’re also in the path of the next one in 2045. #parkchat

Fantastic! I’m so glad you got to see it. And don’t worry about not taking photos. If you’ve never seen a total eclipse, you don’t want to spend it futzing with a camera.

Yes! I remember that. Gorgeous park. Sadly we got clouded out for the eclipse at the last minute. #parkchat

I love those stumps!!! You can actually imagine what it would have been like when those tall trees were there.

A9: are they minerals? And Route 66 goes through there (I used to live right off there in SoCal). #parkchat

Indeed. I still work with a lot of national parks, but mostly from afar. Some from really afar.
