No problem, glad we were able to figure it out together. :)

Same thing here for the kittie's wishlist. Some are just fun stuff we'd like for them but can't afford, some is their regular dietary and medical needs, litter, etc.

Household wishlist. Some bigger items, plenty of small ones. Some regular necessities and a few treats, too. You choose what you'd like to get us:

Anyway, you can help my queer neurodivergent family with multiple health and financial issues out by either donating to our campaign, purchasing something off our wishlists, or boosting these posts when you see them. A personal note from you goes a long way when boosting!

OK, your response was short. It felt to me like you were equating the two kinds of masking, so I wanted to clarify.

Cops aren't concerned with police surveillance but about citizenry surveillance, so it's a whole other beast even in that context.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Lately, I've had a few health care providers actually do the "are you more comfortable if we mask too?" thing and then mask for me, which is amazing. But yea, a lot of what you said still happens, too.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Yes but not in masks designed to prevent or slow down infection by airborne diseases. Those ski masks and balaclavas are not effective for that - only for hiding the face.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Not to mention all of the other airborne diseases that are going around because:

1) people aren't vaccinating as much
2) repeated covid exposures are messing w immune systems
3) climate change and trauma knock-on effects to immune systems

Masking (or better cleaning the air) helps all of 'em!
danielbachman.bsky.social
The mask debate on here is centered around SARS2/COVID (which is still totally not going well) but also misses other parts of what’s going on rn with climate breakdown & a fascist surveillance state. Masking is 100% the future, whether it’s against a novel virus, wildfire smoke, or police cameras.❤️‍🔥😷

All I can add to the “we reject universal masking” discourse is that it’s not about masks. You aren’t rejecting universal masking, which never happened; you’re rejecting having to think about wearing a mask, and maybe feeling badly about thinking about masks. Can’t help you there.

Now if someone is purposefully shopping at the worst stores because of their bigoted views? Bring out the shame, don't let me stop you from having your fun!

But if you don't know the full story and why someone might feel forced to shop there?

Maybe try some curiosity and grace.
sophygurl.bsky.social
So, sure, bring shame back.

Shame Elon, shame Bezos, shame Disney.

But hold back on the shaming of the folks who use twitter, amazon, and watch ABC.

Lives are complicated and we don't always know why people are making the choices they are.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Because those companies know what they're doing and they have the option to stop.

They hold all of the power.

Not everyone who consumes their products has a choice. Or their other option is just as bad or even worse. Or they'll suffer greatly without it.

Because those in power made it that way!
sophygurl.bsky.social
We're all just trying to make the best choices we possibly can.

Stop trying to shame individuals with very little choice and many barriers in their way.

Start shaming the companies themselves - yell at the fascist app owner, the corporate store, the brand using slave labor.
sophygurl.bsky.social
And when it comes down to it - most social media sites are kinda evil (even this one). Most stores are doing unethical things (even your local mom and pop shop). Most brands have skeletons in their closet (even the greenwashed one you prefer).
sophygurl.bsky.social
Maybe someone has to buy the brand you think is the worst because it's the cheapest and they can't afford another or because it's the only one that doesn't have the ingredient they're allergic to.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Maybe someone has to shop at the store you think is the worst one because it's the only one that delivers and they can't easily get out to the physical location due to disability, lack of funds, or being too rurally located.
sophygurl.bsky.social
Maybe someone has to stay on whichever site you think is the worst one because it's where their community is or it's the only place they can make much needed money to survive.
sophygurl.bsky.social
No ethical consumption under capitalism means ALL of our choices are kinda shitty and we're doing our best to make the better of the bad choices.

And the better of the bad choices we have differs from person to person.
sophygurl.bsky.social
For example:

* If you try to shame folks based on what social media sites they use, what stores they shop at, what brands they buy -

- and you don't add in any disclaimers about accessibility, affordability, location of community, etc.

You are shaming the wrong ppl and causing harm.
sophygurl.bsky.social
But shaming poor people? Shaming disabled people? Shaming immigrants? Shaming children and elders? Shaming people who have so little power over their own lives?

It's fucked up.

And a lot of you do a lot more of this than you realize, every day.
sophygurl.bsky.social
We should be shaming billionaires who make greedy and bigoted choices that harm millions everyday.

We could maybe lightly shame less powerful but still highly privileged people who do similar at a smaller scale.
sophygurl.bsky.social
But shame should not be used against people who are simply doing their best given shitty circumstances they can't control.

Shaming folks who don't have the information or resources to make better choices doesn't help anything - in fact, it makes things worse.
sophygurl.bsky.social
What shame is great for is when someone has many easily accessible choices to make and they purposefully pick the shitty one that causes harm.

Sometimes the only way to get thru to ppl like that is through social shame and the fear of isolation as a result.

It's what "cancelling" was meant to be.
sophygurl.bsky.social
I see the jokes, and serious comments, about "bring shame back" and I think it's worth a discussion.

Shame does play an important societal role but it can (and very very often is) used horribly as a weapon against folks who shouldn't be feeling it.
