Hi everyone 👋

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Ok I see news reports lacking clarity. The two roadmaps announced by the COP30 Brazilian presidency on halting deforestation and transitioning away from fossil fuels are voluntary in nature. They were announced at the closing plenary without gavelling. They do not constitute a COP decision

PANAMA: "Mr. President, Panama is extremely disappointed. We were promised a transparent process. That is not what we're seeing. I raise my flag and you ignore it. I raise a point of order, and you ignore it. I sustain it, and it can be ignored."

Scientists at the Planetary Science Pavilion on #COP30: Most of the 1.5°C CO₂ budget is gone. 2025 emissions still rising. ~4 years of budget left. We need 5% cuts yearly & roadmap to phase out fossil fuels. Science must stay in the text, not be scrubbed.

The thing I despise is inhumanity. It’s not really a political position, it’s an existential one. But if your political party manoeuvres itself into a place where it practises and promotes inhumanity, I will despise you.

Another dataset confirms that last month was the warmest October on record in the #Arctic. The previous record was 2024. This is already a month with a very large increasing temperature trend (i.e., Arctic amplification). Not good.

I'll cautiously say I've noticed more skepticism about AI in the corporate world and it's mostly because people's coworkers are creating extra work for them. They don't have the vocabulary to describe it yet but it's basically the "Why should I read what you couldn't be bothered to write" thing

This is simply untenable. There is no way forward with media and political classes captured by the right. Every time someone commits a crime you have to pray it's not an undesirable or it's purge time, then when it turns out to be themselves again they just shrug and wait for the next one.
