At that time I was developing a real-time paint stroke post-processing package for Unity. I moved on because some of the tech + learning in that unlocked an even cooler rendering pipeline that I'm using in our current game.

You can use the depth buffer with a bump offset function to mask sprites by depth and conform them to the geometry. This is especially convenient for dynamic fake light, UI elements, character damage effects… #realtimeVFX #UnrealEngine #gamedev #vfx

Offset VFX toward camera to make it stand out better without having them stand out too much via a render layer. The results are amazing IMO.
Take a child transform that has the VFX. The parent transform looks at the cam then the Z pos is set to bring it closer.
