Hey all, I'm Michael, a writer in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I've written a goodly amount of stuff for The Gauntlet and mostly write TTRPG stuff that alternates between horror and hilarity.

Cover for DEVIL, AIM FOR ME by Michael Van Vleet. Illustration: A man in a grey suit holds a pistol, a single red eye visible under his cowboy hat. He is bleeding from his chest. A shadowy demon figure behind him with many strange eyes is reaching around him, holding his wound closed. The cover of DIE, GRAVE ROBBER, DIE! by Michael Van Vleet. Illustration: A blank eyed green masculine face hovers in the background, its disembodied grasping hands beginning to encircle a shrouded corpse in the foreground, the corpse's mouth in agony, visible even through its sheet. The border is decorated with pink roses. The cover for Moon's Shot by Michael Van Vleet. Illustration: In the foreground, a walrus reclines in a sci-fi flying seat, rockets visible underneath. Its left paw is wrapped around a joystick. In the background, a cave with stalactites. A crude rocket ship has been lowered into it with two stout ropes attached to loops on its roof. Its door is open. Illustration: a bearded man with black glasses gives an evil grin. He is wearing a top hat and a bow tie,and jacket, dressed like a circus ringmaster. Behind him on the left, a grinning clown with black empty eyes. Behind him on the right, a cynical clown looks away, a fez on its head. It holds a balloon decorated with a single unblinking eye.

A friend-of-a-friend who is furloughed because of the US government shutdown is doing some professional GMing. If you’re looking for someone to run Cairn, Shadowdark, Mothership, or other OSR-adjacent games for you and your friends, give his profile a look!

An avalanche of loopy supernatural shenanigans, interpretive dances, and all the snake-related imagery you could ever want. The film warns you repeatedly about the evil of idolatry, but how are you supposed to not worship Snake Queen Suzzanna as she flies through the sky in her solid gold carriage?

Two trans lesbians hugging. Word bubbles read "at least we have each other" "yeah". A minimum wage worker giving a sandwich to a friend struggle-busing. Otter says "this is all I have" to which the shark says "I owe you one" while the otter replies "you can NEVER owe me anything". A minimum wage worker taking out the trash and giving a pep talk to the manager's son. Whale shark friend says "they're all put of popcorn shrimp". Lemon shark crushes a drink and says "what?"

It is a fact long held that in a western the bad guys wear black hats. In Robert Rodriguez’s 1996 vampire flick, From Dusk till Dawn, the Gecko brothers trade black hats for black suits but Rodriguez wastes no time in proving that they are BAD. (1/10)

With that kinda money, it seems like one should be able to buy several perfectly fine back-up hearts.

When Darkness Loves Us messed me up.

It got so dark at one point that I assumed I was reading some sort of extended dream sequence and was horrified when an event occurred that made my misapprehension evident.

oh no... oh no, this is actually happening

A rare feeling horror fans chase.

Two other Big Little Books from the 30s.
A small hardcover book's cover. Title: RADIO PATROL: Trailing the Safeblowers. A small circle says "The BIG LITTLE Book". Banner along the bottom says "Based on the famous newspaper strip"

Illustration is a police car, viewed from the driver's side. Little sign mounted above the front window says POLICE. No lights on top. Stern-faced police man in blue uniform and cap is driving. Hardcover book cover with title G-MAN on the Crime Trail. Inset circle says "The BIG LITTLE Book."

Illustration is a man in a brown suit, vest and hat, leaning forward. In his right hand, he has lifted a bit of red fabric off the floor, which has a white ruff along the bottom, like something someone in Santa's family might wear. The fabric-holding man casts a long shadow over the floor, which is brown but otherwise has no details. The background is a plane of faded purple.

Weeeeeee're baaaack.

#hauntalong has a group of ttrpg wrting/arting/playing friends chatting about their favorite horror movies.

This year, we've got a full month of recos, and we'll truly push Bluesky's threading feature well beyond the black rainbow.

Come haunt along with us.

It’s the game that changed everything for me in a lot of ways—the first time a publisher liked something I wrote enough to buy it from me—but beyond that it’s just a really great game that deserves more attention.

One fun thing about writing a game set in the 1930s is it gives me an excuse to buy artifacts like DOOMED TO DIE and tell myself it's research and not just because I would buy a book with this cover no matter what.
A small hardcover book shot in close-up so you can't tell it's only a few inches tall.

On a bright yellow background, red block text reads "DOOMED to DIE" above an illustration of three figures.

From left to right: a man wearing an Indiana Jones style tan hat-- maybe a fedora?-- his eyes covered by the brim of the hat. He's got an olive green button up shirt on and is grabbing the arms of...

A young man in a white button up shirt, shirt hair, his eyes covered with... honestly, it's a bandage, but it has the shape of a maxipad. It looks to be taped on to his eyes, but the tape doesn't really extend off the bandage much at all. The illustrator is taking some liberties with this bandage/blindfold.

In the front, a tired looking man with dark hair stares directly at the viewer. He has a slightly crooked nose, perhaps a past adjacent to violence.

Are the two men kidnapping this child? Which of them is doomed to die? For that matter, who's the author? The cover is not concerned with these questions.

When I was a young lad with not much money, I bought Chicago's Greatest Hits as I knew most of the songs: safe choice, good value. Over several listens, it did slowly dawn on me: I don't really like Chicago.

There were many ways to go wrong in the era of sealed physical media.

Yeah basically when I was 13 I was given a big gift card to the music store and grabbed 5 CDs because they had a song Id liked on the radio, and discovered everything else on them was awful or boring.

$13 for one song each.

Imagine in the days of CDs and buying an album you’re really excited about and you listen to it and it’s trash. You drove to a physical location and spent 5 dollars for a trash album. And you can’t go online to complain about how trash it is
