In 2023, Russell Vought detailed plans to deploy the military in response to domestic unrest: “We want to be able to shut down the riots and not have the legal community or the defense community come in and say, ‘That’s an inappropriate use of what you’re trying to do."

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

🧪 From American Institute of Physics, summary of proposed spending cuts in science as understood today. Unconfirmed report that NSF could go from $9B to $3B. Even if only directionally correct they amount to major sabotage of US world leading science.

🧪Absolutely devastating to universities.

(This was in Project 2025, page 355.)
🚨RED ALERT for 🧪:

The Trump NIH just gashed indirect costs. This is a direct attack on universities.

“Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs.” 😮

Just a devastating Friday night news dump. #scicomm #academicaky

Fascists always seek to remake arts and culture because these are the spaces that incubate freedom of expression, liberation of identity and openness of mind.
Trump just terminated the Chair of the Kennedy Center and has installed himself as the new chair.

He says he will now be dictating the institution’s “art and culture” and says it “must reflect” what he chooses.

I don’t think anyone in the administration knows or cares the long-term impact of this. I’m not sure anyone can predict all the ripple effects.

Anyway, another American Century would have been boring.
This is a de facto massive budget cut to research universities. We are talking Great Recession size impacts.
⚠️ Effective Monday 2/10/25, NIH indirect rate capped at 15%. Applies to existing & future grants.

—> Deep budget cuts & program closures coming to a university near you.

Is this the break the glass moment for university administrators who have been silent so far about the attack on science?

4/ The biggest surprise? Media indoctrination and civil liberties repression are the most predictive of autocratic survival. These findings have big implications for “information autocracies” in the digital age.

Hard to know the exact details at this point but this sounds like the result of permitting ICE to do collateral arrests again; they found their target and then demanded the papers of everyone else at the location and refused to believe the US citizen (who was likely Latino) was a US citizen.
The Mayor of Newark says ICE detained citizens and a military veteran in a warrantless raid there today. www.newarknj.gov/news/mayor-r...

Trump's promised executive order against "gender ideology" is ugly and dangerous, and also, like everything with Trump, contains few specifics and is meant to terrify people into self-repression. Here's my attempt to refocus on the fight ahead:
Trump’s Assault on Trans Rights Has Begun. Here’s What to Watch For.
An early executive order shows the White House wants to get into the business of defining sex and gender. That could play out in a few ways.

I don't think anyone actually wants it, but a bunch of recent hires suggest that the people that own big newspapers/websites think the future of covering American politics is this kind of cheesy/huffy Tory-scented celebrity gossip tone. I guess rich people find it amusing?
We’re going to see any expression of virtue in the face of vice depicted by legacy media as a vicious attack on an innocent victim

For the next 4 years I will fact check his climate and environmental policies.

Fact: renewable energy is 20 to 30% cheaper than gas.

Fact: 74% of EV’s are manufactured in North America, but only 64% of gasoline power cars are made here.

Fact: the Green New Deal could’ve created 2 million jobs

I have a new paper in Dialogues on Climate Change exploring climate outcomes under current policies. I find that we are likely headed toward 2.7C by 2100 (with uncertainties from 1.9C to 3.7C), and that high end emissions scenarios have become much less likely.

Trump's taking office on Monday and the opposition party doesn't exist
With only 59 votes in, enough Democrats have joined Republicans in support of cloture that we can confirm the bill will become law in a form harsher than when first introduced.

- Kelly (AZ)
- Gallego (AZ)
- Peters (MI)
- Slotkin (MI)
- Rosen (NV)
- Cortez-Masto (NV)
- Hassan (NH)
- Fetterman (PA)
Vote is ongoing right now. We'll see in moments whether or not the rising opposition against the bill has managed to halt it or not.
