It would have been hard to believe, when I moved to the UK over 15 yrs ago to start my PhD at Edinburgh, that successive Conservative and Labour governments would actively undermine one of the UK's most successful and strategic sectors and run it to the ground. Unbelievable, really. And here we are

Important perspective on Leicester vs Coogan.
Updated thread on The Lost King film:
I’m digging over old ground but I have to challenge Steve Coogan's line. He claims it’s all true (as has Philippa Langley): Langley will be celebrated for her achievement, Richard Taylor & his personal gripes will be forgotten
So what’s the real story? 1/15

The Department of Justice has removed a study showing that white supremacist and far-right violence “continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism” in the United States.

Watching Farage's performance on Sky News. For some reason they failed to report this bit...
I've a feeling Mr Farage might very much be regretting his trip... round about ...

Rep. Jamie Raskin tears into Nigel Farage as a "far-right pro-Putin politician" and a "Donald Trump sycophant and wannabe".

I really want to set up a collaboration with the penguins!
Uninhabited and remote islands are tariff loopholes, explained the newly-minted US commerce secretary [via CNBC] 🧪🚢💲📰

"Nations may collaborate with penguins and other species in those remote islands to get around tariffs, he said." 🤡

These bizarre locations have been hit by Trump's tariffs — including an uninhabited island
U.S. President Donald Trump's aggressive and far-reaching "reciprocal tariffs" were signed into effect on Wednesday, hitting over 180 countries.

I feel perhaps it's time for a remake....
If you'd like to see a California-based billionaire with his own space programme blasted out of an airlock by a representative of the British government, Moonraker is free-to-view on ITVx.

I spoke to an academic recently who is soon to take up a visiting fellowship at Harvard researching the rise of far right political entities in the USA. He fears he might be put under pressure to change the emphasis of his research. Not a problem he anticipated when he planned the trip last year.
This is mortifying. It's the kind of calculation you would normally make about a dictatorship.

Been working in Oxford for 6 years in January and still learning about the place....
One extremely obscure hill I will die on is that the small road north of Cornmarket in Oxford is ‘Mag-duh-len’ Street not ‘Maudlin’ Street, as it’s named after the church of Mary Magdalen not the college.

Sometimes, the most important news is when something *isn’t* happening:

Since the last plane crash by a US airline, they have transported passengers for more than two *light-years*
