Historian of the late Middle Ages (and of the history of warfare more generally), academic and magazine editor. Very good with children and cats, not too shabby in the kitchen.
Today I gave a paper, which seemed well received, on the Franco-Burgundian accounts of the Battle of Towton at the Fifteenth Century Conference in Durham. The cathedral is looking magnificent in the late afternoon sunshine …

Look what arrived today. Really pleased to see it in print (always a long road with academic presses) but Oxford University Press have done a fine job.

How deeply depressing: another ‘popular’ book on the Wars of the Roses that merely repeats old myths and ignores any recent research on the subject. 1 star!

Turned my attention to the Second Battle of St Albans, 17 February 1461. Colonel Alfred Burne’s ‘Inherent Military (Im)Probability’ at its very best (with a little bit of faux feminine wiles put in for good measure!)

One of those days at the TNA where you don’t find much that rolls back the frontiers of historical knowledge … oh well, there are worse things to be doing!

Been writing about Mortimer’s Cross this week. We don’t know exactly where it was fought, but we can be pretty certain it was fought on 3 February and Edward saw the parhelion the day before at Hereford.

Reading battle history of the Wars of the Roses is … interesting. There’s a lot of imagination presented as fact!

I am delighted to share the fabulous line up of speakers for the Richard III Society's 2025 Schools' Conference - open to any secondary school teaching the Wars of the Roses at A Level.

I will be watching the programme tonight but really this is the biggest historical non-story of recent years. It’s not even a new discovery!

I have written a post for the Richard III Society’s research blog on Richard and Calais, England’s only remaining continental possession in the 15th century. It illustrates the type of challenge Richard faced in consolidating his rule. riiiresearch.blogspot.com?fbclid=IwZXh...

I’ll be speaking this coming Friday (29 November) at the Institute of Historical Research’s Late Medieval Seminar on how the battles of the Wars of the Roses have been memorialized. It’s been ten years since I last spoke there! www.history.ac.uk/events/sites...
