I curse all parents who are overachievers this time of year by doing elf on the shelf because their kids tell the other kids who have parents who do NOT want to do elf on the shelf 😤

Real rich getting an email reminding us about ethics around the holidays “as a small gift” (I kid you not the email said that) from this administration.

I’m sick. Trying to work from home and failing. Gonna call it quits and take a nap soon. Charlie has been trying to tell me this all day, it seems.

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

It's been awhile, but I found myself recommending to someone today our groundbreaking code, lead by the inimitable Andy Kern, that magically converts pdfs to... pdfs. This solves the conversion issue so many journals pose to the intrepid scientist. github.com/andrewkern/p...
GitHub - andrewkern/pdf2pdf: does the magical pdf-to-pdf conversion popular in academic journal submission sites and does it faster than they do

The Trump Administration is looking to decimate the Endangered Species Act. Proposed changes would:

- LIMIT new species from being listed

- REMOVE protections for federally-threatened species like Piping Plovers

- REDUCE critical habitat protections

To be clear, I’m not happy about any of this. I think the dems completely betrayed their base. They conspired with republicans to make this “deal” to reopen the government. The promise of a vote on healthcare means nothing. We got literally nothing from this shutdown and the dems lost everything.
I think the strategy is to get us furloughed feds all paid, make the holidays less stressful by eliminating the layoff threats through January, then try to negotiate ACA subsidies, and if (when) that goes nowhere with republicans, the dems will shut it all down again…
