Postdoc at Cornell Lab of Ornithology using radar to study offshore bird migration with the BirdCast Team
Reposted by Shannon Curley
A new study looks at bird migration patterns over open ocean in an attempt to assess how much risk offshore wind turbines and other marine infrastructure might pose to them.
Radar study shows when offshore turbines pose greatest risks to migrating birds
When songbirds migrate through the Americas, they often cut through sections of the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico to save energy. A new study looks at their flying patterns in an attempt to…

New paper out led by the awesome @peterw-ecol.bsky.social ! Check out how winter and breeding bird communities in the northeastern US are becoming phylogenetically and functionally more similar to each other over time (and in such an interesting way!)
Functional and phylogenetic convergence of winter and breeding bird communities in the northeastern US
Around the world, ecological communities are becoming more similar to one another in a process known as biotic homogenization – an increase in similarity among communities over time. While biotic hom....

My last trip to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology as a postdoc 😭 I will truly miss this place! I have the best boss and colleagues and grateful for my 2+ years of growing professionally and personally. Not sure what happens next but forever grateful for this experience ❤️

Last year I had the opportunity to try a Zeiss DTI 4/50 thermal imaging camera to study nocturnal bird migration. It was awesome! I have hours of footage - can anyone recommend ways I can enhance the videos or darken the background? Also, note the ✈️ taking off from JFK 🤣

The one post that gets the most traffic is this one here on how to combine presence-only and detection/non-detection data. 🧪

A gentle introduction to an integrated occupancy model that combines presence-only and detection/non-detection data, and how to fit it in `JAGS`
Species distribution models (SDMs) are useful tools in ecology and conservation biology. As the name implies, SDMs are used to estimate species presence or abundance across geographic space and throug...

As director of CESAB, I'm incredibly proud to share the latest article of our postdocs today in Ecology Letters. 👏

They call for a more ethical academic publishing landscape but also ask to not let only the Early Career Researchers pay the price of this paradigm shift !

Excited to share this paper that has been in the works for some time! We demonstrate the homogenization between winter and breeding bird communities across the northeastern United States and highlight individual species/groups contributing to this change. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...
The Erosion of Seasonality in Avian Communities
Aim Seasonality governs species composition at a given place and time. However, the effects of climate and land-use change can vary by season, altering species composition. These changes can lead to.....
