You’d think that all those local references would limit the size of his audience, but since it’s still considered a classic 700 years later, Danté’s literary skills obviously overcame that!

Although it demands a lot of slogging through footnotes for us modern readers, Danté very effectively makes the hellish punishments and their appropriateness clear and relatable by referencing characters his readers would have known well from classical mythology and his contemporary Italy.
