Today in Portland, a fed shooting pepper balls from the roof of the ICE facility was so eager to aim for people’s heads, that after shooting one photographer in the head and another in the upper arm, they accidentally shot a DHS agent in the head. This photo shows the moment of impact;

Feels like the difference between a working-class aligned entertainer (Lorde) and owning-class/ruling-class aligned entertainer (Bono). Even Lorde's pre-show music was Bjørk, Alanis Morrissette, and some of her lesser-known contemporaries, instead of The Immaculate Collection or something.

I was a little record store nerd, so I'd already heard a bootleg from an early Joshua Tree tour show, and didn't have to wait for Rattle and Hum to know the pulling a person out of the audience to play guitar bit was completely rehearsed. Plus U2 played 2 whole Beatles albums before coming onstage 🤮

Saw U2 on the Joshua Tree tour when I was the same age my kid is now. (pretty disappointing: Bono's riz, canned banter, and poses didn't overcome a lack of stage show). Lorde really put on a show, connects more with audience (even w her canned banter) felt more communal.

Lorde concert showcased excellent stage/lighting design w a relatively small amount of equipment used in different ways to keep my attention for 23 songs by (imho) a not very dynamic or charismatic (sorry!) performer. I would have been at Stereolab, but had a great time taking my 13 y.o. to Lorde!

Her music doesn't speak to me (a 52 yr old dude) but I'm so glad my kid and her friends have a popular singer they love who clearly thinks about her music and concerts as art (not just product), and projects real comfort in her body and sexuality w/out making the whole show about either.

The use of video and text and movable lights, plus a lot of the camera angles and shots definitely reminded me of Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense and The Cure in Orange films.
