Anmaßung - Eine Verwechslung

Lieber Milo Rau,
man kann Ihnen vieles nicht vorwerfen - etwa mangelnden Pathos, rhetorisches Talent oder ein Gespür für den dramatisch perfekten Zeitpunkt. Nein, im Gegenteil: Es gehört schon eine gute Portion Inszenierungsfreude dazu, ausgerechnet jetzt, inmitten zaghafter diplomatischer Fortschritte und eines angekündigten Waffenstillstands, den großen Hammer des „Genozid" - Vorwurfs zu schwingen - und dabei ganz nebenbei der westlichen Welt noch ein schlechtes Gewissen einzureden, weil sie nicht geschlossen mit erhobener Faust gegen Israel demonstriert.
Sie gebrauchen große Worte, aber große Worte können große Fehler mit sich bringen und großen
Schaden anrichten.
Man könnte sagen: Sie haben den moralischen Zeigefinger gegen das verbale Schwert eingetauscht - und spielen dabei Kläger, Richter und Dramaturg in Personalunion.
Doch eine wichtige Rolle scheint Ihnen entgangen zu sein: die des Rechtsstaats. Denn - auch wenn es Ihrem revolutionären Impuls zuwiderlaufen mag - über einen Genozid entscheidet immer noch ein Gericht, nicht ein Intendant im selbstgewählten Widerstand.
Die Festwochen, die Sie letztens als „Republik der Liebe" definierten - (da flatterten Sie nur quasi als Gott Amor durch Wien), laufen Gefahr sich unter Ihrer Leitung nun in ein Tribunal des moralischen Furors zu verwandeln.

Aus der Republik der Liebe wird die Republik der Spaltung und des Hasses - mit einschlägigen Untertönen, die Sie entweder billigend in Kauf nehmen oder schlichtweg nicht mehr wahrnehmen.
Sie sprechen von Wahrheit. Ich spreche von Verantwortung.
Und genau diese Verantwortung haben Sie - ausgerechnet Sie, der anderen moralisches Versagen vorwirft - leider verspielt.
Denn was ist das anderes als Opportunismus, wenn man im sicheren Wien auf öffentlicher Bühne den Widerstand proklamiert und Urteile fällt? Ist es nicht bequem, von Kunstfreiheit zu sprechen, während man eine öffentlich finanzierte Plattform nutzt, um politisch zu agitieren?
Vor allem jetzt, wo internationale Debatten sensibel sind, wirkt es zynisch: Wenn — wie Kritiker und einige Berichte behaupten - Teile der EU-Unterstützungen für Gaza in den Bau der Tunnelanlagen und der Anschaffung der Raketen geflossen sein sollen, dann ist es doppelt schlimm, wenn Sie mit unseren Steuergeldern nicht etwa der Komplexität des Konflikts gerecht zu werden versuchen, sondern eher alte Ressentiments indirekt bestärken, statt sie zu bekämpfen. Offentliche Fördermittel stehen doch nicht zur Verfügung, einseitigen Aktivismus zu finanzieren.
Das ist eine unzulässige Vermischung Ihrer Person mit der Institution, die Sie leiten, und Ihre Privatmeinung.
Es sollte selbstverständlich sein, Ihre Privatmeinung nicht auf der Webseite der Wiener Festwochen zu veröffentlichen, da Sie nicht für die Institution als Gesamtes sprechen können.
Ich möchte auch klarstellen: Die Verbreitung von nebulösen Unterstellungen gegen Israel und der unbedarft vorgebrachte Vorwurf des Völkermords erinnert mich unweigerlich an das, was historisch als „blood libel" bezeichnet wird. Was ich in Ihrem Fall eigentlich nicht annehme.

Sie fordern klare Stellungnahmen gegen Verbrechen - das ist ehrenwert. Aber Sie überschreiten die Grenze, wenn Sie gleichzeitig ein Urteil sprechen, ohne das Verfahren, das der Rechtsstaat vorsieht, abzuwarten. Sie übersehen zudem, dass die militärische Auseinandersetzung mit der Hamas längst über-regionale Dimensionen angenommen hat, die bis in den Iran und den Jemen reichen. Das zu ignorieren ist entweder naiv oder politisch absichtlich einseitig.
Sie reden von Menschlichkeit - handeln Sie bitte auch danach.
Sie hatten Ihre Bühne; Sie haben Ihr Statement gemacht. Aber Sie machen dadurch eine öffentlich geförderte Institution zur Tribüne einer einseitigen Agitation. Das Publikum, die Künstler:innen und die Steuerzahler:innen verdienen jedoch Neutralität, Integrität und die Bereitschaft zur Debatte - nicht zur persönlichen Morallektion.
Im Grunde, denke ich, dass Sie Ihren Hut nehmen sollen.
Nicht, weil Sie sprechen. Sondern weil Sie ausgerechnet dort, wo andere nach Differenzierung und Verantwortung suchen, mit dem Hammer der Einseitigkeit zuschlagen. Und weil Sie aus einer Institution der Vielfalt, Kunst und Debatte einen Monolog über Gut und Böse machen - mit Ihnen selbst in der Hauptrolle.
Das Theater braucht keinen Heiland. Sondern Raum für Widerspruch. Und den haben Sie, Milo
Rau, leider zugeschüttet.
Von einem „Ort der Gemeinschaft und Schönheit" haben Sie sich weit entfernt.

These are all sourced from “A People’s History of the United States,” and I struggle to think of a more prescient page from a history book that I have read than this one:

useless scholarly exercise in morality. But the easy acceptance of atrocities as a deplorable but necessary price to pay for progress (Hiro-shima and Vietnam, to save Western civiliza-tion; Kronstadt and Hungary, to save social-ism; nuclear proliferation, to save us all-that is still with us. One reason these atrocities are still with us is that we have learned to bury them in a mass of other facts, as radioactive wastes are buried in containers in the earth.
We have learned to give them exactly the same proportion of attention that teachers and writers often give them in the most respectable of classrooms and textbooks. This learned sense of moral proportion, coming from the apparent objectivity of the scholar, is accepted more easily than when it comes from politicians at press conferences. It is therefore more deadly.
The treatment of heroes (Columbus) and their victims (the Arawaks)-the quiet acceptance of conquest and murder in the name of progress—is only one aspect of a certain approach to history, in which the past is told from the point of view of governments, conquerors, diplomats, leaders. It is as it they, like Columbus, deserve universal acceptance, as if they—the Founding Fathers, Jackson, Lin-

"having a moral compass" in the face of systemic oppression. Its original usage was
"stay woke," unintentionally coined by blues musician Lead Belly.
In a 1938 he was recording his song
"Scottsboro Boys," ending it with spoken word about the song's meaning.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.

After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....
