I know this is an old thought, but I came across this brilliant Octavia Butler poem again today, and I felt a fresh wave of grief that our president and his staff are cowards, fools, thieves, liars, AND tyrants, and what their awfulness is doing to us in turn.
My book club just read Assembly (Natasha Brown) and Audition (Katie Kitamura). I’ll also add Orbital (Samantha Harvey), A Psalm for the Wild Robot (Becky Chambers), Mem (Bethany Morrow), Flyaway (Kathleen Jennings), & Convenience Store Woman (Sayaka Murata). 🙂
Casual swearing used by politicians, CEOs, etc. to sound “passionate” & “real” has become the cultural equivalent of when all of our parents joined & ruined Facebook.
It’s the “in a promotion designed for BookTok enjoyment” for me. Like… how?

Just to be clear:
Today was his official declaration of war on the United States, and all its people.
Hoping this was your way of announcing you’re going to be on Taskmaster!
“At some point” is telling, but I’m more focused on @chrismurphyct.bsky.social referring to “the opposition” as other people. The Dems are now just admitting they’ve abandoned us.
He's telling us what he's doing. Using the military to suppress protest. At some point the opposition needs to listen to him and adjust strategy.
Trump: "The ones that are run by radical left Democrats -- what they've done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles. They're very unsafe places & we're gonna straighten them out one by one. This is gonna be a major part for some people in this room. That's a war too. It's war from within"

Some true things (a non-exhaustive list):
--Kindness is never a mistake.
--Libraries are wonderful.
--You should drink more water than you are.
--If you're grouchy, eat something.
--No one is perfect. Pedestals are not safe for anyone.
--Love is the answer to a lot of questions.
--You are valuable.

Chuck Schumer, in an hour from now: The president plans to flood the streets with military personnel to oppress innocent people, but what he should be flooding the streets with is tax credits for the middle class!
We’re seeing in real time the costs of our education system (mostly) teaching WW2 as it related to American history only. Many of us learned about Pearl Harbor, the holocaust, and how we saved the day & unless we decided to learn about pre-1939 Germany on our own, that’s about it.
Dear American citizens, whatever you wish more German citizens would have done in 1933, do that now.
Everything is a lot, but at least I finally went to the new Brooklyn horror bookstore, Twisted Spine & got these beauties. 🖤
I’m still mad about the ending. Would’ve been fine with the other shortcuts if they at least kept that true to the book.
“Did they only bring back Kimmel because they thought everyone would be raptured by tonight?” is a super normal thought I just had because we live in truly stupid times.
When Alex said “gray” so casually & everyone just nodded like “yep, that’s what yogurt is!” it felt so much weirder to me than the teeth being wet! But yes, I think you’re right.
To any UK Taskmaster fans out there, two questions:
- Is Phil’s whole vibe *always* “season 1 Xander Harris?” What’s his deal?
- So “gray yogurt” is just a thing everyone accepts as normal?
More like this, please.
Dutch late night TV has its take
This has the same energy as Jeremy Jamm telling Leslie “your loss!” after she says he can’t use her bathroom on Parks & Rec.
Didnt catch this last night & love the commitment. I wish there were more fun moments like this in the mostly joyless broadcast.
Jeff Hiller wins!!!! 😭 Best part of the Emmys (and year?) so far. If you still haven’t watched the absolute joy that is Somebody Somewhere, please treat yourself!
Replace the dog breed one with something like “the name of that character actor no one else can remember circa 1985-present” & yeah, same. :)
