I spent the day with my parents, spouse and kiddo, away from the news, from work, like a tiny respite from reality, pushing away all the hard, and for a moment, while I was up for air, I really breathed, the sweet magical air of family. Now I’m back, ready to hold on like hell to what matters most.

On January 16 of this year, I got gamma knife radiation on my #acousticneuroma brain tumor. Tomorrow, my mom gets the same procedure for the breast cancer in her brain. I can’t pinpoint it, but the discomfort welling inside me is deep, full of grief, and complicated. This journey is wild.

If you want to understand why healthcare pricing is horrific, the first thing to know is that our system puts 100% of the credit risk for deductibles, copays and co-insurance on hospitals and doctors. That's insane.

We have turned them into Sub Prime Lenders 🧵

Insurance changed my mom’s cancer treatment, for three months she received a biosimilar not realizing it was truly a different adjuvant therapy. It had catastrophic effects on the course of her cancer treatment. Using insurance is truly the hardest bit. BUT WE KNEW THIS.

The best advice I’ve heard in a long time about how to survive (dare I say thrive?!) in academia as a person of color is to “believe yourself” - believe your experiences, your insights, and your emotions. Holding on to that as I charge forward in an ever changing educational climate.

Is this what people mean when they say sleep hygiene?! Work from home has quite literally turned to work from bed but I have to say, it’s my most productive spot in the house.

Writing a book is not thinking about writing the book, it is certainly not complaining about writing a book, & it is not (just) painstakingly assembling the data for the book. Sometimes writing is just that, writing. Might as well do it in a vibey coffee shop between meetings and daycare pick up.

Opened twitter for the first time in a month. It was feeding me ONLY islamophobic, racist hate. I even saw an ad for a ban on MENA peoples in Norway?! I’m scared for a world where my baby looks at me like I looked at my dad and asks why the people being hated and often killed look so much like us.
