Reminded of GK Chesterton's whole essay on how it should be England who declared a day of Thanksgiving because they were free of the Pilgrims, and the U.S. should instead celebrate the later arrival of William Penn and the Quakers.
The Pilgrims weren't religiously persecuted victims looking for a home where they would be left alone, they were zealots upset that they couldn't impose their form of Christianity on others, and it was actually part of their reasoning that they could impose their religion on indigenous people.
