🌍🌏🌎 Sanderling (Calidris alba)

The Sanderling is a small, plump member of the Sandpiper family. In winter, it's very pale grey above and white below with a dark shoulder patch; breeding plumage adds brick-red. It breeds in the High Arctic tundra but migrates globally, wintering on sandy beaches of every continent except Antarctica. Its characteristic behaviour is running back and forth with the waves on the shoreline ("wave-chasing") to probe for small invertebrates. Two subspecies are recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: The Sanderling is the only sandpiper that lacks a hind toe. This unique anatomical feature is believed to help them run more quickly and efficiently across soft, sandy surfaces.

🌏 Australian Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia castanotis)

The Australian Zebra Finch, also known as the Chestnut-eared Finch, is a small bird native to Central Australia. Males are more colourful, featuring orange cheek patches, black-striped chins, and spotted chestnut flanks; females are plain gray. They are widely distributed across the drier, central 75% of mainland Australia. These highly social, diurnal birds live in large flocks, mate for life, and breed in loose colonies, often following rainfall. Males are known for their complex songs. 2.5 Flash (Edited)

Fun fact: Unlike most birds that scoop water and then tilt their heads back to let gravity help them swallow, the Zebra Finch uses a unique technique: they can sip and swallow water directly and continuously, allowing them to hydrate quickly.

🌎 Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno)

The male Resplendent Quetzal is a stunning iridescent green with a red belly and an exceptionally long, flowing green tail train. Females are duller with a shorter tail. Quetzals inhabit montane cloud forests from Southern Mexico to Western Panama. Generally shy and quiet, they become more vocal and perform elaborate displays during the breeding season. Características

The Alpine Chough (also known as the Yellow-billed Chough) has glossy black plumage, a short yellow bill, and red legs. It's distributed across high mountains from Spain through southern Europe, North Africa, to Central Asia and the Himalayas, often nesting higher than any other bird. These highly social birds are renowned for their acrobatic flight and are often seen in flocks.
