If women are underrepresented in STEM, it's at least partly because men like this offer mentoring, then embarrass themselves by assuming their mentees must be into them, then decide the best solution is to cut ties, which sends the signal to other faculty that the mentee must not be good enough.
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.

Struck this morning by how the win wasn’t from the UC system itself pushing back—it was its worker power through *unions* and aligned groups like @aaup.org defending UC interests, even though admin itself wasn’t.
There’s some kind of lesson here
One reason why elite schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell) caving to Trump’s illegal impoundment and extortion is so galling — a betrayal, really — is that they would have won had they fought. By giving up, they guaranteed every other school will have to fight harder.

One of the most important lessons you have to learn about what a university "is" is a very vulgar marxist distinction between its *managers* (directly or indirectly appointed by capital and/or state government) and its *labor,* who come to the university out of love and idealism.

The Supreme Court is reviewing a vitally important NIH case on its shadow docket.

It is likely that the Court will back Trump, and say his (illegal) grant terminations are ok.

We must speak up now.

have spent a lot of time reading individual articles and i don't think people realize the vast majority are not due to any kind of activism. some had minor legal issues but many have no criminal/protest history. it's happening just because they hate immigrants. www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

so many of these keywords are used in scientific contexts that have nothing to do with the culture war BS (sound *discrimination*, perceptual *bias*, etc). literally nothing would ever get funded. which i guess is the point
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

i keep thinking about this piece and how it relates to DEI in academia: we like to hyperfocus on things like recruitment and fail to recognize a big part of the problem is that there are institutional barriers preventing certain people from even dreaming about being in academia in the first place
