I’m one of many who say emphatically that when it comes to the safe, protected bike & active transport infrastructure our cities need, paint isn’t infrastructure.

It’s a true statement where vulnerable people are surrounded by unsafe vehicles.

But painted bus-only lanes?

Thorbeckeplein, Amsterdam in 1983 and today. I can't actually stand in the exact same spot as the photographer did in 1983 or I'd be among the tables between the tree and the buildings on the left!

In 1983 there is car parking to the left, two rows of car parking to the right and more car parking and another road behind that. Today it is all pedestrianised with a bike lane running through it. Outdoor seating replaces a lot of the car parking

In 1980 the road is open to cars, is wide and has cars parked on it. Today there are rising bollards preventing driving on this street and all car parking removed, replaced by outdoor seating outside a pub
