Why does everyone always "feel" it's a real thing, when scientists and researchers say it's not? Words have meaning, and compulsive behavior is not the same thing as an addiction. This "porn addict" moniker has only been widespread for a few years, fueled only by the right's rhetoric.

Calling guilt-driven fixation an addiction is actively harmful though, as it shifts blame to you & I, creating a climate for censorship legislation and digging people deeper into the religious fervor that causes the guilt in the first place. There is a problem, but that problem isn't addiction.

While it's not a dog whistle, it's a buzzword that serves the political aims of the right wing and evangelical think tanks that fund *all* of the pseudoscientific research into it, not dissimilar to Coca Cola funding "cola is healthy for you" studies.

The obsession and focus may present as a layman's version of addiction, but that isn't what it is and if the label isn't useful it might be worth examining if it applies at all. This rhetoric has only been happening for the past few years, coinciding heavily with a shift right among young men.

I appreciate and accept the apology. As much as it opens you to vulnerability, I find that meeting people with an assumption of trust that can be proven incorrect is a lot more effective than distrust that they must to work to shake off. Not everyone is a troll ♡

The best way is to meet them where they are. Maybe a "hey, I saw this article and thought it was interesting, what do you think?" so it doesn't come across preachy or combative. Hear out their concerns with it, but don't debate. Just let them talk and plant that seed.
