A reminder that almost all of the "migration crisis" of the last 18 months is a manufactured one – and probably says more about how much X has poisoned our politics than anything about realities on the ground.
NEW: Net migration falls sharply to 204,000 in the year to June.

That’s a fall from 649,000 in the year to June 2024. It is a drop of nearly 80% from its 2023 peak.

I thought, given the paucity of ambition, and the terrible inheritance it was actually an okay #budget. Where is the mission and vision?

Serious howls of outrage in the media this morning at what is a relatively modest Budget from Labour that does nothing more than fiddle around the margins.

It does highlight the missed opportunity. If you’re going to get this reaction anyway, why not at least get it for attempting a big swing?

Well said deputy speaker. Media vox popping the shit out of #thebudget and G briefings pre budget day was always going to heighten risks of leaks like this. G and Media has to do better.

This is absolutely magnificent!

Listen to the rapturous applause as a student does the job our press and media won’t, and holds Reform UK’s Richard Tice to account over his lies RE his connection to ex-REFUK Wales leader Nathan Gill, recently jailed for 10+ yrs for taking Russian bribes as an MEP.

Great innings by Head, obviously. But going to bumpers 8 overs in after failing to leave balls when batting. Basically fed him 90 of his runs...inexcusable from England. Cricket isnt ice skating. You dont win marks for artistic impression. Pretty angry tbh. Brainless. #theashes #ashes

This is nowhere near good enough. Giving bowlers just 30 overs of rest means far less chance of them achieving pace and bounce of 1st innings. Bazball will have to go down as an entertaining failure if this goes the way it looks to be. #theashes

England's two innings in Perth lasted a combined 405 balls - the fastest they've been bowled out twice in a Test match since 1904 😳

Collapsing whilst bazballing is still collapsing. #theashes It's worse if anything as gives bowlers little recovety time.

We. I.e the UK need a proper grown up conversation about pensions. Inter generational fairness but also private vs public. You could give many in the public sector a pay rise today and boost economy if you cut their pension entitlement to something a bit more realistic.
Junior doctors in England could get a guaranteed pension of nearly £125,000 a year once they retire, analysis has suggested ⬇️

I'd need to hear more about the @greenparty.org.uk policies on the 3 P's that continue to undermine our ability to grow, protect the environment and create intergenerational unfairness and inequality. Planning, Pensions, population. Getting close to getting my vote.

A Government of cowards.

Rather than tackle inequality - they've gone for pensioners, disabled people and now it's people fleeing war and persecution.

They can't get away with this.

Fascinating that the cause of collapse of both major parties has not just been basically identical (cost of living and service failings creating unpopularity, chasing radical right tail on immigration fuelling in-bloc schism), but that doubling down has persisted long after failure became clear.

Labour’s *real* core voters are middle class liberals and ethnic minority voters.

At least when Corbyn supporters said “fuck off and join the Tories” the leadership didn’t actually endorse it. Number 10 seems actively determined to show how much it despises its voters’ values right now.

This genuinely baffling as well as appalling. Just really stupid politics. Makes me laugh that the people behind policies like this really believe they're the cleverest in the room. Just so dumb and gifting Reform the next GE by amplifying their only real talking point.
