Government policies has big effect on how quickly humanity will transition away from Fossil fuels, so it's right to try to estimate the impact of different policies, to give politicians a guide to impacts of their decisions.

However, economics also plays a big role, also crucial to model...
The International Energy Agency (IEA) got plenty of critique for bringing back the Current Policies Scenario (CPS).

I think it was a good idea to bring back. Let me explain why...

Follow the trend line from the peak at the end of 2023 to Q2 2024 it looks like we'll have no Hydrogen heavy-duty truck sales in 2026.

Suspect there will still be some because of deluded politicians pushing funds into dead end solutions because the don't undersand physics and economics.
Today's #HydrogenSoufflé comes from the heavy-duty truck market, which soared from absolutely nothing in 2020 to not-quite-nothing in Q4 2023, before collapsing to 1/3 of not-quite-nothing in 2025. If you think it's different in China, no: that's *including* China!

From the trajectory of Poland's electric grid looks Renewables will provide more power than Coal around 2027.
Truly remarkable: Poland used to be a climate laggard.

Today, wind and solar are increasingly replacing coal in the Polish electricity mix with almost 30% of all electricity generated to date this year from wind and solar.

In 2000 coal provided 95% of Polish electricity.

Today it is at 51%.

Great to see solar, batteries and wind power all combined in one yacht, really need to expand this out to cargo ships.

Like @rustneversleeps.bsky.social and @mliebreich.bsky.social I find simplified analysis helpful in understanding relationships in a system.

Our transition away from fossil fuels is critical task for humanity to undertake, modelling & tracking progress helps us grasp the scale of the challenge.
Listening to @volts.wtf recent panel/podcast with @mliebreich.bsky.social , discussing his "Pragmatic Climate Reset", published in two parts at BNEF last September.

Michael mentioned his "simplest energy model ever" - just 4 parameters - and I decided to sketch up and add emissions and temps.

Solar prices have dropped from $128/Watt in 1975 to $0.26/Watt in 2024. This astonishing drop can be viewed on a linear scale, but this makes it look like price drops have dropped little in the past 20 years.

Logarithmic scale shows the relative price drops have accelerated since 2008!

I'm impressed at how patient @mliebreich.bsky.social was in this debate.

The economic viability of the hydrogen economy relies upon everything else being more expensive so it can compete.

Meanwhile renewables, battery storage & direct electrification are already cheaper than Fossil Fuel Systems.
The average hydrogen share price fell 90% between January 2022 and April this year. It is now down only 89%. According to Erik Rakhou, this tiny dead cat bounce is evidence of the dawn of the Hydrogen Economy. What do you think? Listen to the debate: youtu.be/FSWDgNWeVjk?...

@smmt-ukauto.bsky.social have published their UK October 2025 new car registration figures, with BEV and PHEVs both show strong growth while pure Petrol and Diesel segments shrinking.

If BEVs continue to follow this growth trajectory then they'll likely be half of UK new car sales in 2027.

This graph of life expectancy needs to be named the #DonaldDip.

The massive drop in life expectancy during COVID has in the US far outstrips the drop in other nations. This all happened in Donald Trump's first presidency.
This graph never fails to be shocking: "The US has experienced the earliest and greatest slowdown in life expectancy improvements among higher-income countries, reported Eileen Crimmins. “We have horrible life expectancy—and it’s getting worse and worse”"

Adoption of solar and batteries in households and businesses across the world could well be a getaway into transitioning from fossil fuelled solutions for transport and heating to electrified ones.

Once you adopt successfully one of these solutions you'll be more receptive to others.
The underlying fundamental economics have changed dramatically: solar is now so cheap that businesses and households all around the world install it often without subsidies. Throw in batteries and the business case just keeps improving.

Last week visited a client in Belgium and chose to drive & take the Hull-Rotterdam ferry rather fly.

It took 24hrs door to door in both directions including Ferry. Driving. Not quick but lower CO2 and more flexible.

Total cost of home and public charging was £80.62, which is 9p/mile.

Ferry £303!
