The UK did have one standout product that was considered globally valuable- universities- and unilaterally decided to stop providing the product because it was more important to be xenophobic than successful
The UK’s economic problems are quite deep-rooted. The best summary I can offer is “we don’t make enough valuable, productive stuff and sell it to the world any more”.
Things like planning and energy no doubt play a role in that - but I don’t think they’re enough to fix it on their own

Your Prime Day reminder that half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food & housing costs.

A third have had to rely on government assistance like SNAP — which is about to get cut.

If Bezos can spend $50M on a wedding, Amazon can afford to treat its workers with dignity.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

You know, with Am*z*n and B&N trying to run sales over Independent Bookstore Day, this seems like a pretty good week to crow about the cool stuff we do here. We're proud of this stuff, so we should tell you about it. So here's a thread...

Hello—Is A River Alive? is out a week today, on 1 May.
I went to Clays the printer to see how my books are made (many marvellous machines!) & to sign 3000 special editions.
Here’s what happened in 40 seconds.
Here are the indie bookshops who have the specials for pre-order: linktr.ee/Is_A_River_A...

Just finished North Woods by Daniel Mason... many thoughts. A very dense book! Nearly gave up, about 1/3 way in but v pleased to have carried on. So many strands, each one could be a novel in itself.

And the 'credit poles' and the bad smell of 'real books'...
I don't think @shteyngart.bsky.social gets enough credit for predicting the venal idiocy of this particular timeline.

In Super Sad True Love Story (2010) Americans get mistakenly deported to gulags by a super-glitchy AI otter who calls everyone "pa'dner".

There is no moral equivalence between bullies and the bullied, between tyranny and democracy, or between brutality and decency. No individual can be free in a society devoid of justice. There can be no liberty where brutality reigns.
