My second book about axe murder will be unleashed upon the world on May 13, 2025! WHACK JOB: A History of Axe Murder chronicles the humble tool in its capacity as a weapon in 13 stories, ranging from prehistory to Vikings to George Washington to now. Preorder here read.macmillan.com/lp/whack-job...
The cover of my next book, Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder. It's red with white and black text and there's an axe striking the O and leaving a splatter. At the bottom is my name Rachel McCarthy James coauthor of The Man from the Train. At the top is a blurb from Mary Roach reading: As sharply honed as its subject matter. A promotional image for my book Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder. The cover has an axe whacking the O in Job and there's another axe and some blood spatter. Caption: For as long as the axe has been in our hands, we have used it to kill. On sale 5/13/25 from St. Martin's Press
Also he'd never try to ruin someone's life over a group chat unless they said something about Charlie Kirk, in which case he'll have them deported
Every single thing JD Vance says about the Young Republicans should follow him to the end of his career. This time: the leaker is a scumbag, the 30-something hate mongers are 21-year-old kids

SPECIAL SKILLS: I can recognize in under two seconds that the security guard in The Village is Abe from Mad Men (Peggy's season 4-6 leftist boyfriend played by Charlie Hofheimer - the one she stabbed)
JD Vance has given us a gift by visibly and repeatedly tying himself to the content of the Young Republicans hate chat. I hope we don’t waste it
This reading makes the movie more coherent. Very interesting disability film, especially for 2005.
really wish the Politico piece had included the ages of these ghouls
One thing I respect is that it makes CHOICES. I don't always understand them, especially with Everett, but I'd really be interested to see what was left on the cutting room floor. Someone should write a book about it tbh, it's a rich text!
One thing I kind of like about it is that it gives you solid footing to dislike almost every character (except Thad, Patrick, and Susannah). Most movies - esp Christmas movies - are not willing to do that!
Very well made in many ways - beautifully filmed, wonderful performances - but the story and each character’s actions and motivations are nigh-incomprehensible. And yet there are many sequences (esp the climax) which are quite rewarding and cathartic!
Watched The Family Stone in full for the first time this weekend, and I have to say it’s a BIZARRE movie. Definitely a cult picture, both in the Umberto Eco intertextual collage sense and in the sense that most people want the term to mean - underperformed at release but has since become beloved.

In that Stephanopoulos interview, JD Vance keeps going “and Tom Homan is getting DEATH THREATS”. Does he realize that no one really cares about death threats anymore? Like, everyone who’s been on social media for longer than an hour has gotten death threats, who cares, why should Homan be exempt
i really really really want there to be another "n" in "sycophantic". just sounds right
