Well, there's a photo I never expected to see in my life. Noam Chomsky palling around with Steve Bannon.

whenever we talk about the eternal humanities versus STEM debate on here, it’s probably worth remembering that an American fascist administration is very actively trying to finish off the already-weakened humanities, even *more* so than it’s trying to do the same to all science it doesn’t like
This -- a model bill to effectively decimate non-STEM research by requiring 3-3 teaching loads outside of "STEM or Americanism and western civilization" -- seems...extremely bad but also quite plausible.
Proposed Model Bill Would Change College Tenure, Teaching, & Research
Three conservative groups have proposed model legislation that would dramatically change faculty tenure paths, teaching loads, research activities and hiring authority

I'm coming out as a fan of "Die with a Smile."
It catches so many strays from music critics and like-minded people, but the fact is, it's written by two of the most gifted songwriters we have.
Yes it's sappy, and wildly popular with "normies," but that doesn't mean it's not a GOOD song.

I believe the expiration of ACA subsidies will ignite a shitstorm the likes of which the GOP has never seen.

I've been on the ACA since the start of the program, 2014. For 2026 I decided to go onto my husband's employer-sponsored insurance. Premium is wildly expensive, but deductible is about half.

I keep thinking about how terrible it is that so many people will be losing their health insurance in January due to costs and cuts. I was rejected from insurance once before the ACA [preexisting conditions]. I was hospitalized that year and it almost bankrupted me. We need universal heathcare ASAP.

Democratic leadership didn’t want to stick their necks out for him. The GOP didn’t want him even referred to as a “Maryland man.” Sen. Chris Van Hollen, his congressional representative fought for him. And we should never forget any of this. apnews.com/article/abre...

Look, far be it for me to defend Nuzzi - she deserves all the clowning on here.
Still, I find it really curious that no one's talking about how she was basically groomed by Olbermann and that started her on this whole path.

The quickest and easiest inoculation against getting scammed is..accepting that you could definitely fall for it and need to be vigilant. You may still get scammed, but at least you won't be shamefaced about it!
There's a tendency to look at these after the fact and go "I would never fall for this" but I have definitely gotten emails from journalists or public figures I don't know, done 5-ish minutes of googling and replied. At first it looks like a totally harmless, plausible message!

And sadly I think this is going to widen the class/educational divide among Americans - where educated people will go out of their (our!) way to avoid AI and even pay for anti-AI services. Meanwhile, poor folks will become even more inundated with fake shit and disinformation. Pretty terrifying TBH.
Stunned we haven't seen the rise of "anti-AI" businesses.

Media outlets that promise human reporting and authorship.

Shopping sites that promise human curation.

Art sites that promise human creation.

"How do I avoid slop?" is gonna be a defining question in 2026. Businesses should answer it.

This is really incredible. The government's battle to deport Abrego Garcia has apparently been based on a lie from the start. Not even the "gang affiliation" lie or the "human smuggling" lie, but the more basic assertion that he was ordered to be deported in the first place.
🚨Judge Xinis finds that, incredibly, Mr. Abrego Garcia was never ordered deported in 2019. She notes that every since this saga began all the way back in March, the government has NEVER been able to produce any evidence that the immigration judge actually issued a removal order.

The rural western US looks like a very scary place for kids right now. I'm seeing some counties as low as 50%.
