_**Fairport Convention - University Of Nottingham Sports Centre, Nottingham, United Kingdom, October 25, 1975**_ That’s right, we’re staying in the vintage britfolk zone — 'tis the season, right? Here, we’ve got Fairport Convention 50 years ago out in Robin Hood country on their _Rising For The Moon_ tour. The band’s last go-round with the radiant Sandy Denny! A weird lineup, even by Fairport standards; no Dave Mattacks, no Simon Nicol, and of course, no Richard Thompson (Mattacks and Nicol were actually touring with RT at this point, I believe) … and a yank playing guitar?! Actually, Jerry Donahue acquits himself quite well on this solid radio broadcast, dueling fiercely with Dave Swarbrick’s typically wild violin. Speaking of which, check out psych-y Swarb on the epic “Sloth.” Armed with an array of FX pedals, he sounds like he might be auditioning for a spot in Pink Floyd at certain points. Go off, king! Other highlights include a gorgeous “Stranger To Himself,” a roaring “John the Gun” and a closing version of Sandy’s signature “Who Knows Where The Time Goes” that’ll have you transfixed. **_Bruce Rowland:_** Sandy was mesmerising. Pete Townshend put his finger on it: no vibrato at all. The expressiveness of her voice, the wonderful songs, and the problem for all of us that she was endlessly forgivable. She only had to open her mouth and sing and the synchronised weeping would start. Her tragedy was that she never really understood how well loved she was both by the punters and the band and other musicians.
