I've made a lot of progress since last year, excited to share more soon!

would love to chat with others who are interested in a PDS for private data, related projects, etc

who should I speak to?
As part of preparing for #ATmosphereConf in Vancouver March 2026, we're republishing the videos from Seattle March 2025, along with transcripts.

Here's @raz.lol with a talk on Extending ATproto for private data.

yes absolutely but scale & speed both are qualities of classical computing (ie servers, internet infra), not llms

... but all stuff that human brains can already, for the most part, trivially do
January 10, 2026 at 12:02 AM
shower thought

classical computing was game changer because it could do things humans could never, or ever be able to do - like process billions of calculations in a second

llms are game changer because they can do things classical computers could never do, like understand language, write, etc...

software by definition should be malleable. pliable. should conform like clay. soft and moldable, in your own hands

yep they are compatible but built for different use cases!

atproto is meant for public social data, Basic is built for private personal data (docs, work, files, context, memory, etc)
November 25, 2025 at 6:38 PM
hopefully within the next month or two! aiming to have the atproto integrations fully done before the atproto conf early next year.

might also open up the project as a bounty for any interested open source devs!
November 25, 2025 at 6:11 PM
no frankenstiening needed, they are meant to be very compatible. i showed a little demo about how this could work, but the idea is Basic is the private data pds that will work alongside atproto for public social data

so how does this all work?

using "protocol composition" (a phrase i borrowed from @bmann.ca )

combing atproto with basic: an open protocol for private PDS's. by using both protocols side by side, you get the benefits of public social content with private data.
November 25, 2025 at 5:43 PM
yes exactly!! Basic is almost like atproto for private data

data is stored locally first, and then synced to a private PDS thats created when you first sign up. for now, we are just hosting all the PDS' but they will ofc be federated & self hostable.
