Alexander’s expression shifted, barely perceptible but present in the downward tilt of his brows and the deepening of the crow’s feet around his eyes. As Faysal continued to fiddle with the containers, pouring the solutions into smaller vessels, he moved around the counter to look at the teenager sitting quietly on the floor. Jessica didn't respond to his presence, presumably having fallen back asleep. “…is he worth it?” Faysal looked up from his work to scan his father’s weary face, searching for the intent behind the question. Alexander had made it explicitly clear what he thought about their blooming relationship; he didn't trust that the turn the conversation was taking would be a positive one. “What do you mean?” “The risk. Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

The concern in her voice wasn't altogether unusual; her overprotective nature had been a foregone conclusion, his childhood marked by her anxious spells and endless fussing over both him and his sister. “…no? Was she supposed to be?” Furrowing his brow, Faysal checked his messages to see if he’d missed any from his younger sister. He pressed his chin into the top of Ash’s head as he scrolled. Seeing nothing, his confusion building, he brought the device back up to his ear. “She’s not at home?” “No. She was out with some friends, but hasn’t come home…” Her anxious rambling trailed off, turning subdued. He made a thoughtful noise. “She isn’t answering her phone either. I’ve tried so many times!”

“You’re so pretty. So, so pretty, love.” Faysal bent his head, tenderly kissing the thin scar Ash had exposed originally for the second time. Another found the ragged burn mark only a few inches lower, then the scattering of old gunshot wounds on his left side. He followed every affectionate kiss with a touch, his fingertips tracing over the same spots. Before Ash could ask what he was doing, his lips parting to do so, Faysal turned his face up to give him a sweet smile. “You’ve sacrificed so much, haven’t you? Would you tell me about them one day?” His brows pinched together. Over the many years it took for each to fracture his sensitive skin, he'd never openly shared where they came from. It'd been obvious to any of the agents who saw them that the shared experience of physical pain needed no explanation. For anyone else, the response had been open disdain or disapproval rather than curiosity. He wasn't certain how to take the question when Faysal fell somewhere else entirely in his endless quest for information.

But…” Faysal’s shoulders tensed. His grip around Ash’s hips tightened as he swallowed. “I mean… uh… did you… did you know it only actually takes-” …he did.
